February is one of my favorite months to travel across Europe. While the weather can be unpredictable, an abundance of fantastic events fills the calendar. From vibrant carnival festivities steeped in tradition, to romantic Valentine’s Day adventures, along with ski slopes covered in fresh powder and mesmerizing northern lights excursions in the Arctic, determining the best places to visit in Europe during February proves to be quite a challenge.
That said, if you’re looking to escape the chilly, grey, dreary days at home, there are also several warm destinations in Europe to explore in February. Mid-month is also a popular time for family-friendly holiday destinations, coinciding with the February half-term break. Moreover, this off-peak period usually comes with many excellent deals, perfect for a cost-effective getaway.
To assist you in planning your European adventure this February, I have organized this article into five sections: ski and snow activities, winter sun destinations, romantic getaways, cultured city breaks, and unique local celebrations. I’ve steered clear of generic suggestions like “visit London because it’s less crowded”; instead, I’ve highlighted destinations showcasing special events in February, ensuring your visit is truly memorable.
Best European Adventure, Snow and Ski Destinations in February
For avid skiers, February is the perfect month to hit the slopes. However, skiing is not the only thrilling activity available this month. Opportunities for northern lights viewing, snowshoeing, and Arctic adventures abound in the northern winter climates.
French Alps
Known as one of the most esteemed ski destinations worldwide, the French Alps undisputedly reign supreme for offering luxurious resorts and superior ski trails. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region boasts over 150 ski and winter sports resorts, catering to everyone—from lavish accommodations with direct access to some of Les 3 Vallées’ premium ski runs, to budget-friendly ski passes in Le Semnoz.
The slopes of France serve as a fantastic destination during February’s half-term as they are easily accessible via short flights to Chambéry, Grenoble, or Lyon, or by driving through the Channel Tunnel. Family-friendly ski resorts abound, with companies like Sno providing tailored packages and lodgings suitable for children of all ages. Some chalets and resorts even feature kids’ clubs, teen ski schools, and childcare services.
Additionally, an exciting event in February is the Pyrotechnic Arts Festival near the upscale resort of Courchevel, where fireworks and torchlit evenings illuminate the sky weekly from February 15th to March 7th, 2024.
Nordland, Norway
Nestled in Norway’s least populated region, Nordland is famed for the breathtaking Lofoten Islands. The scenery here is nothing short of spectacular in February, with snow blanketing the majestic peaks and colorful Rorbu cabins (traditional fishing huts) standing out against the white landscape. The region offers a wealth of winter activities, including skiing around Narvik and snowshoeing in the Arctic, with parts of Lapland also falling within Nordland. Most appealing is that some of Norway’s most scenic long-distance train routes begin and end in this area, and the Nordland Travel Pass enables car-free exploration throughout the region.
Moreover, Nordland is a top winter destination for two primary reasons. First, the northern lights (aurora borealis) are expected to be especially vivid this winter, coinciding with the peak of the 12-year Solar Cycle in early 2024—if the sky is clear then, spectacular displays are likely to be frequent.
Second, Bodø, a remote city in the region, has been recognized as one of the EU’s Capitals of Culture for 2024—the first Arctic city to receive this title. A year-long cultural program kicks off on February 3, 2024, featuring an extraordinary floating stage in the city’s harbor to mark the inauguration of Bodø2024.
Tyrol, Austria
The Austrian Alps come alive in winter, making February an excellent time to explore this mountainous region filled with adventurous skiing opportunities. From renowned slopes around Ischgl and Serfaus to beginner-friendly trails at Kitzbühel, Tyrol offers a vast array of ski resorts. Cross-country skiing and sledging are excellent activities for the whole family.
Yet, the allure of February in Tyrol isn’t just about the fresh snow; the region is steeped in history and tradition. Carnival season adds a burst of color to the winter white. Towns celebrate with parades, showcasing traditional costumes alongside witches and wooden masks. A highlight in 2024 is the Imst Schemenlaufen (February 4, 2024)—a culturally significant masked parade included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, taking place only once every four years. If you’re in Austria this February, it’s a must-see event.
If you’re searching for a quick getaway, consider spending a long weekend in Innsbruck. It’s an ideal European city escape for ski enthusiasts due to its close proximity to several mountains, while also offering a wealth of museums and cultural attractions to fill your days. Innsbruck serves as a great base for thrilling snow-covered treks in Karwendel Nature Park.
Where to Go in February in Europe for Valentine’s Day
With Valentine’s Day falling on a Wednesday in 2024, planning a romantic midweek getaway can be tricky. However, there’s no need to restrict your celebrations to the commercialized day itself—why not plan a weekend city break instead? You could choose from any of Europe’s most romantic cities, such as Paris, Florence, or Prague. Alternatively, consider planning your Valentine’s Day excursion around one of these captivating annual events.
Venice, Italy
Often regarded as the epitome of romance, Venice is undoubtedly a prime destination for Valentine’s Day—but rather than imagining pleasant yet cold gondola rides, focus on the enchanting Venice Carnival (February 3–13, 2024).
Dating back to the 12th century (and possibly informally predating it), Venice Carnival remains one of the most extraordinary festivals worldwide, bursting with vivid colors, glamour, revelry, and mystery—often behind the iconic Venetian masks that have adorned the city since the Middle Ages. The carnival combines grand, ticketed balls with vibrant street performances, competitions, and parades. Why not surprise your loved one with a visit to Venice this February to experience this magical event?
If you’d like an alternative romantic destination nearby, consider Verona, the city famously linked to Romeo and Juliet, where Valentine’s Day is also celebrated in style. You’ll find a multitude of memorable activities to enjoy throughout Italy.
Sitges, Spain
Known for being one of Europe’s most LGBTQ+-friendly destinations, Sitges celebrates its large carnival event between February 8th and 14th, 2024, making it an ideal atmosphere for the LGBTQ+ community to honor Valentine’s Day. As one of the oldest carnivals in Catalonia, Sitges erupts with elaborate parades, vibrant costumes, and excited crowds, shaking off winter hibernation in a dazzling display.
Two significant parades will occur during this time, the second being on February 13, 2024, coinciding perfectly for festivities that spill into Valentine’s Day. The major LGBTQ+ bars and clubs will be bustling with parties and events throughout the week.
When not caught up in the festivities (which can be hard to avoid), you’re welcome to explore fantastic local attractions like the Cau Ferrat Museum, dine at sea-view restaurants, and stroll through the quaint, compact Old Town. Although February isn’t known for its beach weather in Sitges, with a bit of luck, you may still experience some lovely sunny days ideal for soaking up the Mediterranean atmosphere.
Côte d’Azur, France
While Paris might be the go-to city for a Valentine’s Day escape, consider turning your romantic getaway into a week-long escape along the stunning French Riviera. Known for its luxury, film festivals, and charming pastel-colored homes, combined with the allure of Monaco, this region boasts an array of top-notch restaurants and resorts to whisk you away along the shoreline.
Additionally, February hosts a number of remarkable events along the Côte d’Azur. One particularly famous celebration is the Nice Carnival, one of the world’s largest carnivals, where this posh seaside enclave bursts to life with dazzling parades (the illuminated evening parade is particularly a sight to see), flower battles (yes, really!), and lively revelry. Not far away in Menton, close to the Italian border, the Fête du Citron—or Lemon Festival—also occurs from February 17th to March 3rd, 2024. This colorful festival celebrates citrus fruits with extravagant parades, artisan stalls, and local produce tastings. Another lovely event to catch is the Fête du Mimosa (February 14th – 18th, 2024), celebrating the blossoming of the delightful Mimosa trees.
Best European Cities to Visit in February
When compiling my recommendations for the best European cities to visit in February, I focused on destinations that have annual events on the calendar, strong food and drink scenes (ideal for those colder nights), and an array of museums or cultural attractions to enjoy, particularly if the weather takes a turn for the worse. For those seeking budget-friendly dining options with a higher chance of sunny skies, consider destinations like Valletta (Malta), Lisbon (Portugal), or Chania (Crete, Greece).
Agrigento, Sicily, Italy
Sicily is always a wise choice, and if you’re in Europe in February, make sure to visit Agrigento, well-known for its stunning almond tree blossoms. Not only can you enjoy the scenery, but there’s also an official Festival of Almond Blossom (2024 dates to be confirmed), which features performances, parades, and puppet shows. Later in the month, the city hosts a grand feast in honor of its patron saint.
Regardless of the blossoms, Agrigento is a significant reason to visit Sicily year-round. The town is rich in history, and the Valle dei Templi—a UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient Greek temples— provides a breathtaking backdrop as you stroll along the ridge connecting these historic marvels. Although February weather can be unpredictable, Sicily’s southern location makes it one of the warmest places in Europe to visit this time of year.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Chic Copenhagen is an excellent European city break in February, thanks to the Vinterjazz festival (February 1st – 25th, 2024) which brings an added flair to this already culturally-rich city. Over three weeks, various venues host multiple concerts, ranging from outdoor performances to impressive contemporary concert halls. Note that while some events are free, most will require tickets, so be sure to plan accordingly.
In addition to the jazz performances, a weekend visit to Copenhagen packs in plenty of activities. With more than 50 fantastic museums, you’ll find ample indoor respite during bouts of rain; some museums, like the standout SMK Art Museum, can easily occupy half your day. For those who enjoy opulent halls and royal history, the city’s impressive palaces and castles will surely charm you. Don’t forget to check out iconic sights such as the colorful 17th-century Nyhavn Canal and the often-overrated Little Mermaid statue to round off your visit.
Another perk of visiting during this season is that accommodation prices are typically lower than in the busy peak season or holiday period. To save even more, consider staying in hostels (many now offer trendy private room options), join a free walking tour (don’t forget to tip), look into discounts with the Copenhagen Card, and opt for the Havnebussen (harbor bus) instead of a canal tour. All are fantastic ways to enhance your February visit while being budget-friendly.
Brussels, Belgium
Often underrated, many first-time visitors assume Brussels will be a sterile and bureaucratic experience, but in reality, it’s anything but. Exceptional cuisine can be found on nearly every street corner along with various global gastronomic influences; the nation’s love for high-quality craft beer guarantees that bars remain inviting, even during colder winter evenings, and the city’s array of celebrated cultural institutions, galleries, and museums can fill many rainy days. And who could forget the delightful Belgian chocolate?
Moreover, visiting Brussels in February also grants access to the Bright Festival of Lights (from February 15th to 18th, 2024). This event showcases installations from both local and international artists, illuminating some of the city’s most notable landmarks and giving the cold nights a magical glow.
Warm European Destinations in February for Winter Sun
If you’re wondering where to find warmth in Europe in February, my previous recommendations of top destinations like the Algarve, Malta, and the Canary Islands still hold true. However, February also opens up a few additional excellent locations, primarily celebrated for their huge carnivals under (hopefully) sunny skies. And, since even the warmest winter spots in Europe cannot guarantee endless sunny days, rest assured that if you do wander into unfortunate weather, the unforgettable cultural experiences make up for it.
Andalucía (or Tenerife), Spain
The southern region of Andalucía is one of mainland Europe’s warmest winter destinations, with daytime temperatures in Seville often reaching 17°C (62°F) during February. While some rain may occur and evenings can be brisk, you can warm up amidst the vibrant carnival celebrations regardless of the weather.
Everywhere you visit in this passionate region will likely come alive with festivities. Some of the most notable celebrations include the lively street party of Cadiz Carnival (February 8th – 18th, 2024), which lasts more than a week, and the historic Málaga Carnival (February 3rd – 11th, 2024). Both events boast grand spectacles, humor, and a festive atmosphere suitable for an exciting getaway. The Carnaval Colombino, held in Huelva, is another festival worth exploring. Planning a road trip through Andalucía is a fantastic way to soak up regional culture, tasty tapas, and striking Islamic architecture as prices and crowds remain manageable along the coast, allowing you to enjoy the vibrant parties along the way.
If you’re seeking the largest February celebrations in Spain, consider heading to Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife stands out with its exuberance, spanning fifteen days and consuming the capital. Proximity to the Sahara ensures even warmer temperatures in this area, promising a lively and festive atmosphere. This year’s events kick off in January and conclude on February 18, 2024.
Madeira, Portugal
Boasting an almost year-round spring-like climate, the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira is one of the warmest destinations in Europe in February, with daytime temperatures often around 16°C (61°F). Despite occasional rain and cooler evenings, you can still enjoy winter sunshine, swim in natural volcanic pools, or hike through some of Portugal’s most breathtaking mountain trails.
However, unlike many well-known beach destinations, most beaches in Madeira feature pebbly or rocky shores. For those seeking soft, golden sands, you’ll need to take a two-hour ferry ride to Porto Santo, Madeira’s little sister island, where stunning sandy stretches await. During the off-season, the few hotels that remain open often provide fantastic deals.
That said, Madeira’s most highly anticipated event in February is the two-week-long carnival (February 7th – 18th, 2024). Usually starting in the second week, expect a festival filled with flower-themed costumes and colorful dancers while local wine and the traditional poncha (a sugarcane rum drink) flow throughout the festivities—though the largest celebrations occur in Funchal, the capital city.
Cyprus
Although technically located in Western Asia, the Mediterranean island of Cyprus is nonetheless regarded as one of the warmest spots to visit in Europe in February. With a mild winter climate averaging around 15°C (59°F) and a mix of sunny and cloudy days, Cyprus is a fairly reliable destination for winter sunshine—though it doesn’t offer a full beach holiday experience just yet.
The island features stunning shorelines, beautiful beaches, and plenty to explore, fulfilling the needs of both relaxation and adventure. When the sun goes down, if rain does arrive, ample attractions await to keep you entertained—ranging from the ancient wonders of Paphos, like the 4th-century BC Tombs of the Kings, to the vibrant museums of Nicosia, both offering varied and fascinating experiences.
February also brings exciting celebrations to Cyprus—the local carnival kicks off around mid-month, with festivities filling various towns and villages. Among the largest are those in Paphos, culminating in a grand parade on March 9, 2024, and Limassol, where festivities run from February 8th to March 17th, 2024, showcasing food, dance, and all-around merriment.
More ‘Offbeat’ Places to Visit in February in Europe
Finally, let’s discuss some of Europe’s overlooked towns and cities that are worth a visit in February. Here’s a selection of my personal favorites.
Podence, Portugal
A fascinating destination in February is the small northern Portuguese village of Podence. Although this off-the-beaten-path gem usually flies under the radar, the Carnival of Podence (February 18th – 21st, 2024) transforms the village into a vibrant hub.
Despite being UNESCO-listed for its rich tradition and unique costumes, many travelers remain unaware of this intriguing carnival. For those wishing to participate, prior planning is essential, as while thousands gather in Podence for the celebration, local infrastructure may be limited to accommodate such a crowd. Renting a car and staying in larger nearby towns like Bragança, Macedo de Cavaleiros, or Vila Real is recommended for a more comfortable visit.
What makes this lesser-known carnival so exceptional? For one, its roots lie in ancient rites of passage, paganism, fertility, and marking the end of winter. The performances of the ‘Caretos,’ in their tradition-infused, colorfully adorned costumes and masks, are mesmerizing.
Over the four days, participants light bonfires, and the haunting sounds of the gaita (a traditional bagpipe from Northern Portugal and Galicia) fill the air as the Caretos whirl flaming torches. The atmosphere is a kaleidoscope of color and folklore, making this event a true hidden gem worth exploring.
Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina
Although Sarajevo often finds itself mired in discussions about war and its past, focusing solely on this perspective does a disservice to its evolving narrative. The capital city offers a rich tapestry of cultures, religions, and traditions, presenting a dynamic atmosphere with trendy cafés, flourishing galleries, and celebratory events.
Sarajevo’s Winter Festival (commemorating its 40th anniversary starting February 7, 2024) beckons art lovers with a diverse array of offerings, including art exhibitions, literary events, concerts, theatre, and opera performances. Held both within the city’s cultural hubs and the nearby Olympic Mountains, the festival began as a cultural initiative during the Winter Games. This February gathering provides an excellent opportunity to explore a cultural landscape often overlooked by travelers.
Apart from the events, take time to discover one of the most fascinating cities in Europe. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn about its challenging history at the Museum of Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide. You may also want to delve deeper into the city’s complex past by exploring the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, an event that ignited World War I. Beyond historical contemplation, embrace the city’s architectural diversity with its charming mosques and stunning features like Vijećnica (the Town Hall). Experience the burgeoning café culture, admire the city from the iconic Yellow Fortress, and immerse yourself in the bustling bazaar of Baščaršija. For those inclined, skiing on the nearby slopes offers an affordable winter option compared to the pricier resorts in France.
Durham, England
If you’re looking for a European getaway in February without the hassle of flying, consider a UK staycation in Durham during the half-term holidays. Rich in historical heritage, with highlights like Durham Castle and Cathedral—both reminiscent of Harry Potter—this vibrant city provides an exciting atmosphere and an array of affordable dining options favored by the student population.
The top two reasons to visit Durham in February include the annual Fire & Ice event (February 23rd – 24th, 2024), when the city lights up with interactive displays, icy sculptures, and evening bonfires. Equally, the open-air Beamish Museum features a dedicated program throughout the February half-term, showcasing remarkable reconstructed towns and living history with costumed characters and authentic trams.
If you’re in Scotland and prefer staying local, consider visiting Aberdeen for the SPECTRA Festival of Light (February 8th -11th, 2024), which beautifies the city’s charming cobbled streets with stunning illuminations.
