Located just outside the town center, this splendid Renaissance church sits amidst a spacious lawn. It was built on the site of an earlier medieval church. A remarkable medieval fresco depicting the Virgin Mary with Child and St. Francis was believed to be miraculous and inspired local citizens to construct a grander and more beautiful church in that precise location.
Aside from its artwork, the church is also worth a visit for its charming old well situated in the lawn, making it an excellent spot for photos!
Learn the Story of the Marzocco Column
The emblem of Montepulciano is a column topped by the Marzocco statue, a lion typically associated with Florentine imagery. Originally, the column bore a wolf statue representing Siena until Montepulciano was overtaken by the Florentine forces in 1511. The lion was then placed atop the column to signify Florence’s dominance over Siena. The name Marzocco comes from the Latin version of “Mars,” the god historically linked to Florence.
Climb to the Top of the City Hall
This magnificent Gothic structure, dating back to the 13th century, was restored during the Renaissance, showcasing the architectural style popular at that time.
