2024 TMAC Awards: A Journey with The Rock

Date:

This isn’t your typical blog post. It’s not a listicle, nor a travel tip article, or a destination review. Instead, I want to share a personal moment of joy that I hope you’ll appreciate and celebrate with me.

2024 TMAC Awards

This past week, I had the pleasure of visiting the central coast of Newfoundland, culminating in a stay in St. John’s, the capital of the province, for the annual Travel Media Association of Canada (TMAC) conference.

I’ve been a member of this professional travel writing association for nearly a decade, which has allowed me to meet fellow writers and gain valuable insights into travel and the craft of writing.

This year, 2024, marks the 30th anniversary of TMAC. It was heartwarming to reconnect with old friends and make new acquaintances, while also discussing the exciting and challenging times our industry faces.

In-person interactions hold great significance, especially when I reflect on the isolated times during Covid. Newfoundland, with its stunning landscapes and warm, welcoming people, made for the perfect venue for this year’s gathering.

My introduction to Newfoundland was in the summer of 2023, when I explored Western Newfoundland and followed the Viking Trail.

I also participated in the 20th anniversary of the Writers at Woody Point Festival, held in the quaint town of Woody Point. Attending this annual literary festival, which celebrates Canadian literature, music, and the arts, was undoubtedly a highlight of my summer.

A First Place Finish

I am both honored and thrilled to share that I won 1st Place at the TMAC awards on June 16, 2024, in the ‘Spirit of Canada’ category for my story A Literary Kitchen Party Flourishes in Woody Point.

As a member of a Canadian writing association focused on sharing stories about our beautiful country and beyond, this category is exceptionally competitive.

It feels especially fitting that my story—about writers capturing human experiences and set in Newfoundland and Labrador, places where connections run deep—was recognized. Writing this piece and being part of its creation has been a tremendous gift.

I am filled with gratitude, and my euphoric reaction, beautifully captured in the photograph below, reflects my genuine joy. It was an unforgettable and emotional evening celebrating the remarkable stories from talented Canadian writers.

Congratulations to all my talented fellow winners and nominees, and to everyone committed to telling important and impactful stories.

My heartfelt thanks go to Kristy Hoddinott of Go Western Newfoundland, Gillian Marx of Tourism Newfoundland and Labrador, Travel Yukon for sponsoring this award category, and to Adrian Brijbassi of Vacay Canada for publishing the story.
