While Rome is filled with historic sites, museums, and enchanting charm, one of the reasons we find ourselves returning time and again is the ease with which we can explore the surrounding Italian countryside. With its central location and efficient train system, taking day trips from Rome is a breeze. If you’ve already admired Florence, tilted your head at the leaning tower in Pisa, and are ready to uncover some less-explored gems, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite day trips from Rome. Enjoy golden beaches along the Lazio coastline in Gaeta, relax by stunning lakes, explore the ruins of Hadrian’s Villa, delve into history at Pompeii, or discover the quieter side of the Amalfi Coast. Each of these destinations is conveniently reachable within a short train ride from the city.
Gaeta
If you’re seeking a day by the sea combined with history and charm, Gaeta is the place for you. Nestled along the Lazio coastline, this hidden gem is situated south of Rome and easily accessible by regional trains that run every hour. The journey to Formia-Gaeta station takes just 90 minutes, followed by a short taxi ride into Gaeta’s historic center.
Once you arrive, you can dive into Gaeta’s rich history while taking in its lovely beaches and medieval architecture—all set against the stunning backdrop of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Explore landmarks such as Montagna Spaccata (Split Mountain), where legend states the earth cracked during Christ’s crucifixion. Don’t miss the ancient Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity, which rests atop a cliff, or take a leisurely stroll through the charming medieval streets to reach the Angevin Aragonese Castle. When you’re ready to relax, visit Serapo Beach, known for its beauty, or dine at a local trattoria while enjoying fresh seafood and sea views. Gaeta exquisitely blends history, relaxation, and coastal charm, making it an ideal day trip from Rome.
Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli
While Rome itself is a historical treasure, there are archaeological sites worthy of your time beyond the city limits. Tivoli, located just 40 minutes away by train or bus, is home to the magnificent Villa Adriana, the sprawling estate once owned by Emperor Hadrian. Here, you can explore the extensive grounds filled with grand palaces, lush gardens, and peaceful reflecting pools—all emblematic of imperial luxury. Marvel at architectural wonders like the Canopus, adorned with elegant colonnades and statues, which showcase the brilliance of ancient Roman engineering.
Once you’ve explored the villa, unwind in Tivoli or take the opportunity to visit the nearby stunning Villa d’Este, famous for its magical fountains.
Salerno
For a taste of southern Italian charm just a day trip away from Rome, head to Salerno. Although several trains connect the two cities, we recommend splurging on the high-speed Frecciarossa train, which delivers you to Salerno in just 1 hour and 35 minutes. Why choose Salerno over the more touristy Sorrento or Positano? We appreciate Salerno’s historical allure and its off-the-beaten-path vibe. The train station is conveniently located in the city center, making it easy to explore on foot.
Once in Salerno, wander through the medieval old town and make sure to visit the 11th-century Duomo, which features a sparkling gold crypt dedicated to Saint Matthew. Afterward, take a stroll along the lungomare (seafront promenade) for picturesque views of the Amalfi Coast in the distance.
Salerno serves as the gateway to the scenic Amalfi Coast. From here, you can easily catch a Travelmar ferry just a few blocks from the station to visit nearby Vietri sul Mare, known for its exquisite handmade ceramics. Spend some time exploring the local shops for unique ceramic pieces that make perfect souvenirs, or choose to visit the quaint fishing village of Cetara for a memorable seafood lunch followed by a refreshing swim beneath the historic watchtower.
Pompeii
If you’re captivated by the Roman Empire, don’t miss the opportunity to take a day trip from Rome to explore the ancient city of Pompeii. Many visitors are surprised to learn how accessible this incredible site is by train. Buried under volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, Pompeii offers a unique chance to wander the streets of a well-preserved Roman city. Marvel at ancient villas, admire frescoes, envision the sounds of gladiators in the arena, and encounter the haunting plaster casts of Pompeii’s last inhabitants.
For a more enriching experience, consider booking a full-day guided tour that departs from Rome. This option provides expert insights into the site’s history and daily life, complete with a visit to the prestigious Naples Archaeological Museum.

This charming town is renowned for its Orsini-Odescalchi Castle, a beautifully preserved medieval fortress offering sweeping views of the lake and surrounding landscape. Inside, you’ll find grand halls and historical artifacts that make it a must-visit for history enthusiasts.
After touring the castle, enjoy a leisurely walk along the lakeshore where you can unwind, savor a meal at a local trattoria, or even embark on a boat ride across the lake. Bracciano’s serene environment and rich history provide a perfect respite from the energetic atmosphere of Rome.
Castel Gandolfo
A trip to Castel Gandolfo allows you to escape to the picturesque Alban Hills, where the summer residence of the popes awaits. Just a short train ride from Rome, Castel Gandolfo is known for its beautiful Papal Palace and lush gardens, now part of the Vatican Museums. Stroll through the meticulously maintained grounds, enjoying scenic views of Lake Albano, and immerse yourself in centuries of history within the palace.
Consider booking a guided tour to explore the freshly renovated rooms inhabited by the popes and wander through the vast gardens. With its rich history and tranquil lakeside setting, a day at Castel Gandolfo promises a refreshing getaway just outside the bustling city.
Orvieto
Orvieto is one of our favorite day trips from Rome, and it’s easy to see why. Perched dramatically atop a volcanic tuff cliff, Orvieto offers a captivating blend of history, architecture, and stunning views. Even if you think you’ve had your fill of churches, be sure to visit Orvieto’s Duomo, an iconic Gothic cathedral adorned with intricate mosaics, sculptures, and signature black-and-white stripes made from basalt and marble. Beyond the Duomo, spend time wandering the charming streets, exploring the underground caves, and soaking in the vistas of the surrounding Umbrian countryside.
