Bodrum, Turkey Travel Guide: Your Ultimate Trip Planning Resource (With Video)

As part of my two-week Turkish coastline road trip, I arrived in Bodrum after a two and a half hour drive from Marmaris.

How to Reach Bodrum

Reaching Bodrum is quite convenient, as it can be accessed via various modes of transport:

• By Car: Depending on your starting point, you can drive to Bodrum using your own or a rental car. Estimated travel times from popular Turkish destinations include: 7.5 hours from Istanbul, 4.5 hours from Kaş, 5.5 hours from Antalya, and 10.5 hours from Cappadocia.
• By Bus: Frequent bus services run from Istanbul, Izmir, and other Turkish cities.
• By Ferry: For those preferring a sea journey, ferry services are available from Greek islands such as Kos and Rhodes.
• By Plane: The most convenient option is to fly into Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV), located about 36 kilometers from the city center. There are direct flights from major cities in Europe and Turkey.

Best Time to Visit Bodrum, Turkey

Wondering when is the best time to visit? Although Bodrum is a year-round destination due to its Mediterranean climate, the timing of your visit depends on your preferences. Typically, the shoulder seasons are the most favorable for travel.

The ideal times to visit Bodrum are during spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October), when the weather is pleasant and tourist crowds are smaller. The summer months (July and August) can be quite hot and crowded, while winter (November to March) is mild but less busy.

During my visit in December, the weather was pleasantly cool, allowing me to comfortably wear a light jacket or even go without one at times (noting that I’m from Toronto and accustomed to much colder winters).

While driving to Bodrum, I encountered heavy rain for most of my first day, but thankfully, it cleared up the following day, revealing perfect sunny weather.

The tourist areas, such as the beach restaurants, were quite tranquil during my stay (with the exception of a local municipal cafe by the beach), but the city center was lively with local residents. Some attractions and activities were closed for the off-season, such as boat operations.

Is Bodrum Safe?

Bodrum, as a popular travel destination in Turkey, is generally considered safe for tourists. It features a low crime rate and extraordinarily friendly locals. However, like any tourist spot, it’s wise to take standard safety precautions such as keeping an eye on your belongings and avoiding isolated areas after dark.

During my time in Bodrum, I mostly walked around after parking my car at the hotel, covering a lot of ground. I walked from my hotel to the Ancient Theatre and then to the Bodrum Windmills, which made for an extensive walking tour during my trip.

Based on my experience, I felt quite safe, especially in busy or well-lit areas. I made it a point to avoid quiet alleyways at night.

Situated along the highway, this remarkably preserved ancient theater, dating back to the 4th century BC, is still used for concerts and events today. It’s larger than the Antiphellos Theatre in Kaş and showcases all the classic features of period theaters.

Bodrum Beaches

Bodrum’s beaches are a major draw, so be sure to soak up the sun and enjoy the crystal-clear waters. Whether you prefer relaxing on the sandy shores or engaging in water sports like snorkeling and windsurfing, there’s something for everyone.

Both public and private beaches are accessible, and it’s a perk that the municipality’s cafes are located by the public beach, allowing you to enjoy meals and drinks while taking in the beach atmosphere.

Bodrum Castle

Also known as the Castle of St. Peter, Bodrum Castle provides breathtaking views of the city and the sea. This historic fortress is home to the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, featuring artifacts from shipwrecks.

Bodrum Harbor

Stroll along the scenic harbor, lined with yachts and traditional gulets, where you’ll also find Bodrum Castle.

Bodrum Windmills

The iconic windmills, perched on a hill that overlooks Bodrum and Gumbet, offer fantastic photo opportunities and panoramic 360-degree views of both towns.

Cumhuriyet Caddesi

This vibrant shopping street features a diverse range of shops selling souvenirs, clothing, and local handicrafts, along with numerous restaurants and bars, many of which offer happy hour specials.

Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

Although only remnants remain, this historical site is recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Here, visitors will find ruins alongside a museum that provides more information, replicas, and a video about the Mausoleum and its history.

Top Restaurants and Places to Eat & Drink in Bodrum

Wondering where to eat and drink in Bodrum? As a coastal town along the Mediterranean, Bodrum is known for its abundant fresh seafood, as well as delicious local Turkish cuisine.

Bodrum is also one of three cities in Turkey (along with Istanbul and Izmir) to feature in the Michelin Guide. Additionally, the municipality operates several cafes by the waterfront offering delicious food at reasonable prices while you soak in the views.

Here are some top-rated restaurants and places to dine in Bodrum:

Bayram Balik

Located in the city center, Bayram Balik is hailed as one of the finest seafood restaurants in Bodrum. A local took me here after I sought their recommendation, and it turns out this place holds an impressive 4.9-star rating on Google Maps.

Highlight dishes include grilled octopus and butter garlic shrimp. The grilled octopus was the best I had during my Turkey trip—perfectly cooked with a robust flavor. The butter garlic shrimp was also delicious, perfect for dipping bread.

Dinc Restaurant and Cafe

Situated by the sea, Dinc Restaurant and Cafe offers a wide selection of seafood dishes and Mediterranean cuisine. I highly recommend this affordable beachside restaurant where the food is consistently splendid.

The grilled sea bass was cooked to perfection, and the fried calamari was the best I encountered throughout my Turkish Riviera journey—the squid was flavorful, and the batter was crispy yet light.

This restaurant also offers happy hour deals on beers and features a more extensive range of complimentary tea options. In addition to ordinary Turkish tea, they offer unique blends like orange tea and lemon & mint tea, which I found delightful.

Gumbet Belediye Cafe

Located along Gumbet Beach, Gumbet Belediye Cafe is a charming municipal cafe situated at the base of the Bodrum Windmills. It offers a quieter atmosphere compared to the bustling Mahfel Cafe in Bodrum.

This delightful cafe serves Turkish dishes and beverages (as well as some international options) at very reasonable prices, all while providing beautiful views or even direct access to the beach.

One local recommended this spot to me when I expressed a desire to enjoy a beer while watching the sunset, and the views did not disappoint!

Mahfel Cafe

Situated by Bodrum City Beach and Cumhuriyet Caddesi shopping street, Mahfel Cafe is another municipal cafe that offers a perfect place to unwind and mingle with locals amid the tourist crowd.

Similar to Gumbet Belediye Cafe, they serve the same menu and provide stunning views, with the option to sit by the water on the Bodrum side.

Ozcan Ozlem Unlu Sutlu

Situated in the city center, Ozcan Ozlem Unlu Sutlu is a popular local cafe known for its delicious desserts and bakery items. I visited this cafe right after meeting a local at the Bodrum Windmills, where I enjoyed a Turkish coffee to recharge after our hike.

Yeni Bodrum Ocakbasi

Located near Bodrum City Beach and directly across from Agan Pansiyon, where I stayed, Yeni Bodrum Ocakbasi is among the best Turkish restaurants in Bodrum, specializing in traditional kebabs and pide.

This small, family-run restaurant prides itself on using fresh ingredients and making everything from scratch—something you can witness firsthand (my video captures them preparing kebabs and pide). I particularly loved the Lamb Shish, which was expertly grilled over charcoal.

Where to Stay in Bodrum

Agan Pansiyon

Agan Pansiyon provides comfortable and affordable lodging. This family-run guesthouse is conveniently located near the beach and city center, making it perfect for exploring Bodrum.

I stayed in a single bedroom equipped with air conditioning, a TV, and a private bathroom. My room also featured a balcony with a table and chairs.
