Updated for 2024 (originally published in 2015).

As someone who has lived a location-independent lifestyle, I’ve curated a comprehensive list of travel safety tips and essentials.

Safeguarding what is most important to you can greatly enhance your travel experience; after all, it’s difficult to enjoy a trip without peace of mind. From handy accessories to online encryption tools, here are the key items that help keep me safe and protect my valuables while traveling.

Pacsafe Anti-Theft Backpack

Travel gear, travel backpack, travel safety tips, travel safety gear, travel essentialsAnyone who knows me is aware of my fondness for Pacsafe’s anti-theft products. I traveled throughout Southeast Asia and Africa using their Ultimatesafe Anti-Theft Backpack (read my full review here). This backpack is high-quality and comfortable, featuring several theft deterrent options like a security zipper, an adjustable strap that can be secured to a fixed object to prevent bag-snatching, and an RFID-blocking pocket.

Though the Ultimatesafe Backpack has been discontinued, you can check out the latest Pacsafe Vibe Backpack as an alternative.

Pacsafe Anti-Theft Handbag

Depending on my activities, I can wear the Pacsafe Slingsafe 250 GII as a shoulder or cross-body bag. While it has been discontinued, the Pacsafe Cruise Crossbody Handbag offers similar functionality.

Pacsafe has an extensive range of anti-theft products available for both men and women, so be sure to explore their collection.

Infinity Scarf with a Hidden Pocket

These infinity scarves come in various colors and fabrics from lighter materials for warm climates to heavier options.

Door Handle Alarm

It’s essential to note that while the alarm does not physically prevent entry, it’s designed to startle intruders.

For added security, consider using a door stopper in conjunction with the alarm (this is effective only for doors that open inward).

Safety Whistle

This small, lightweight item can be a lifesaver when your voice can’t do the job. You might already have a whistle lying around your home. Renowned long-term traveler Jodi Ettenberg from Legal Nomads shares how a whistle came to her rescue on three different occasions in this insightful post.

Retractable Cable Lock

Retractable cable lock, travel gear, travel essentials, travel necessitiesThis sturdy steel cable allows you to secure your suitcase or backpack to a fixed item, for example, in a hotel room or on a train. A common issue for solo travelers is finding a trustworthy companion to watch over your belongings when it isn’t practical to take them with you, such as during trips to public restrooms.

I encountered this predicament at an Indian train station once. I had to rush to the restroom, leaving my luggage behind, but fortunately, everything was just as I left it when I returned. That experience taught me an important lesson, so now I don’t take that risk anymore. A retractable cable lock is a compact and lightweight solution for added security.

Mini LED Flashlight/Lantern

Power outages are common in many developing countries, whether we like it or not. From the Galapagos Islands to Rwanda, I’ve experienced this countless times. To be prepared, I carry a small LED flashlight that can also stand upright to function as a lantern. It’s been an essential tool on numerous occasions.

Compass

Compass, travel necessities, travel gear, travel compassWhen I find myself wandering through areas known for pickpocketing, I prefer not to whip out my phone to check directions. That’s when an old-fashioned compass comes in handy.

It’s also an excellent backup in case my phone’s battery dies and I can no longer access the compass app.

VPN

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is essential for digital nomads and anyone who values online privacy. Essentially, a VPN encrypts your internet activity, allowing for anonymous browsing. This way, you can securely access public and hotel Wi-Fi without fear. A VPN can also alter your IP address, making it appear as though you are in a different country, which is particularly useful in highly restricted locations like China.

Keep in mind that using a VPN can slow your connection speed by up to 50%, especially with free services. However, for as little as $5/month, it’s a worthwhile investment.

ExpressVPN, VPN, virtual private network, travel tips, travel essentialsMake sure to choose a VPN service compatible with the countries you plan to visit, as not all providers work in places like China. Additionally, download the app to your devices before you leave home, as accessing it may be challenging abroad.

I personally use PureVPN. It’s budget-friendly and gives me access to over 3,000 servers in 25 countries. The Kill Switch feature is another valuable addition, ensuring that my internet cuts off if the VPN ever disconnects to protect my sensitive information.

Password Manager

After years of endangering my online security by storing passwords on paper or in spreadsheets, I finally adopted a password manager. Why wait for a security breach or a natural disaster to strike? Safeguard your personal data with a password management system that securely encrypts all your passwords in one accessible location, no matter where you are worldwide. Many password managers come equipped with features like mobile syncing and automatic password generation.

I use KeePassX for both traveling and everyday use. It’s free, and I can confidently say my password security has never been better. Check out my post about the significance of password management for travel for more insights.

Travel Insurance

Finally, traveling without insurance—especially an emergency medical policy—is ill-advised.

World Nomads, travel insurance, travel accessories, travel gear, travel safety, travel safety tips, travel essentialsWorld Nomads is a reputable insurance provider that continues coverage even after you’ve left your home country. Their affordable plans cover everything from emergency medical care to trip cancellations and protection for your electronic devices. They even have plans specifically for high-risk activities like mountain climbing and scuba diving, plus the convenience of extending your policy online.

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. Always review the fine print and understand the extent of your coverage before making a purchase.

Travel Registration in Your Country

While this may not fit into the “travel product” category, it’s essential advice. I highly recommend registering your trip with your government before you travel. If you’re Canadian, you can register here. This provides you with consular services and updates about emergencies in your destination. It also ensures that your family can reach you in case of a crisis, and the Canadian government can assist you during natural disasters or civil unrest.
