Renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli has launched an innovative project that merges art, culture, and nature by creating an open-air amphitheater in his hometown of Lajatico, nestled in the beautiful countryside of Tuscany.
The amphitheater hosts a single concert by Bocelli each summer before returning to its serene state for the remainder of the year. Thus, the venue’s name, il Teatro del Silenzio (The Theatre of Silence), is exceptionally fitting. At the center of this venue, a sculpture of a human face resides in the middle of a small lake, crafted by Polish artist Igor Mitoraj for the opera Manon Lescaut.
Bocelli aims to transform this venue into a “Woodstock of Opera,” collaborating annually with prominent figures in the operatic world. This extraordinary experience merges the breathtaking beauty of Tuscany’s hills and cypress trees with classical music and culture. The Theatre of Silence holds a special significance for the tenor, as this charitable event, which changes its theme each year, is very close to his heart. Five enchanting venues to experience authentic Italian Opera
Italy, the birthplace of opera, remains one of the best destinations in the world for operatic performances. Originally an art form for the elite, opera has evolved into a cultural phenomenon accessible to everyone. There’s no better place to experience opera than Italy! Here are five of the most historic venues where opera enthusiasts can enjoy performances.
1) Venice – Gran Teatro La Fenice
Venice’s primary opera house, La Fenice, takes its name from the Italian word for the phoenix. This legendary bird is known for rising from the ashes. La Fenice has experienced three devastating fires since its debut in the 18th century, with the latest in the 1990s almost destroying it entirely. Like the mythical phoenix, it has been rebuilt and restored to its magnificent glory, now featuring a modern stage that continues to delight audiences today.
2) Milan – Teatro alla Scala
Teatro alla Scala, or La Scala, was constructed in 1778 on the site of the Santa Maria alla Scala Church, which inspired its name. The elegantly decorated balcony seats were originally owned by prominent Milanese families, making La Scala the place to be seen, with performances serving merely as a backdrop. It underwent a complete renovation from 2002 to 2004. A visit to La Scala is a dream for many opera lovers, and its backstage tours offer remarkable insights into today’s theatrical world.
3) Trieste – Teatro Verdi
Teatro Verdi, named after the composer Giuseppe Verdi, was originally established as “Teatro Nuovo” and is one of the oldest opera houses in the world, inaugurated in 1801. The architects involved in its construction also worked on La Fenice and La Scala, resulting in a design that combines elements from both venues.
4) Turin – Teatro Regio
Teatro Regio in Turin has set the standard for opera house construction since it opened in 1740. Built by the Societa dei Signori Cavalieri of Turin, this stunning opera house boasts 1,500 seats and 139 box seats. After a rebuild in 1973, it reopened with a performance of Verdi’s I Vespri Siciliani, featuring famous artists Maria Callas and Giuseppe Di Stefano.
5) Verona – Amphitheatre Arena
