My Top Picks for Travel Gadgets

Date:

*Updated September 5, 2021*

The increasing availability of high-quality electronic devices has led to an expansion of my travel gear, especially as I take my freelance work and blogging on extended trips abroad. Some of these gadgets are absolutely essential; others are merely “nice to have.” However, they all share a common trait: they make my travels more efficient and enjoyable. Here’s a list of my top electronic devices and accessories for modern travelers:

MacBook Air

Prior to my long-term travels, I sold my MacBook Pro and switched to the lighter and slimmer MacBook Air (13-inch). While it may not be as fast or powerful as the Pro, it handles all my needs—whether I’m publishing blog posts, writing freelance articles, or editing photos in Adobe Lightroom—quite well.

Do I need to use an Apple laptop? Not necessarily, but I have grown familiar and comfortable with the Mac operating system over the years. When I run into issues, I can easily schedule a fix at the nearest Apple Store. (I realize this isn’t practical if I’m far from an Apple Store, but the same problem could arise with any other laptop.) Additionally, my MacBook Air syncs seamlessly with my iPhone.

Laptop Case and Keyboard Protector

With the intention of selling my laptop when upgrading, I take extra care to keep it clean and scratch-free. The Mosiso laptop case protects the exterior, while the silicone keyboard cover keeps dust and food crumbs out from between the keys (they can be purchased together as a set).

To deter thieves, I opted for a bright red laptop case, helping me quickly identify my MacBook Air if someone attempts to take it.

iPhone

Only within the last six years did I start traveling with my iPhone. In the past, fearful of theft (or losing it due to my own carelessness), I only carried a $20 second-hand smartphone purchased from Craigslist and relied on hotel computers for internet access.

iPhone, travel essentials

Now, however, I can’t imagine traveling without my iPhone. With an improved camera, more advanced features, and a plethora of helpful travel apps, it’s indispensable. Unlocking it allows me to use local SIM cards, giving me affordable data options or, in countries like Thailand, data at remarkably low prices.

Astro Mini External Battery Charger

As smartphone batteries age, they tend to drain more quickly. This compact, lipstick-shaped device from Anker rejuvenates my iPhone when it’s down to 2% power, providing a full charge. It’s incredibly handy when I find myself far from a power outlet or have forgotten my charger. After using the Astro Mini, I recharge it in my hotel room, taking about 3-4 hours, so it’s ready for the next time I need it—like when dolphins leap in front of my boat in the Indian Ocean.

The Astro Mini can also power tablets and GoPros, although it won’t provide a full charge for those devices.

Update: This product has been discontinued, but here’s a more powerful alternative from Anker.

Smartphone Battery Case

I heavily rely on my iPhone, especially since I’m passionate about mobile photography (check out my Instagram feed for my work). I use an iPhone battery case that serves the same purpose as the Astro Mini but allows me to take photos without a cumbersome battery pack attached.

To charge my iPhone, I simply insert it into the battery case, press a button, and it starts charging to 100%.

Portable Speaker

While a portable speaker isn’t essential, the lightweight X-mini Capsule Speaker significantly enhances sound quality and delivers surprisingly powerful bass for its size. The battery lasts up to 12 hours and can be conveniently charged via USB (included).

When it’s time to store the speaker, I can simply collapse it into a ball that fits in my hand and toss it into my packing cube. Plus, if it gets stolen, it’s so affordable that I won’t lose any sleep over it.

This product has been discontinued but has been replaced by an even better wireless version.

Bose Headphones

I have uniquely shaped ears, and standard earbuds just don’t stay in well. The Bose SoundTrue In-Ear Headphones fit comfortably and securely, providing the renowned sound quality Bose is known for.

Update: I lost these headphones and replaced them with the Bose wireless Soundsport headphones, which I adore.

In the future, I plan to upgrade to noise-canceling headphones. (Both options are available for non-Apple devices as well.)

E-Reader

Making the leap from traditional books to eBooks took me a while. There’s something special about flipping through pages and reading black ink on paper after long hours in front of a computer screen—not to mention sharing my favorite books with friends. However, the convenience of e-readers, which can hold hundreds or even thousands of eBooks in a slim, compact device, is undeniable. I use the Kobo Aura, which features anti-glare, e-ink touch technology that mimics the paper reading experience and reduces eye strain, even in direct sunlight (the Kindle Paperwhite is the U.S. equivalent).

Portable Hard Drive(s)

Back up your data, dear reader. I learned this the hard way after several heart-stopping scares leading me to invest in portable hard drives for my data and photos. Now that my photography skills have greatly advanced, these drives are essential for my peace of mind. Today’s portable hard drives are compact and lightweight. If disaster strikes—whether my hotel floods, my laptop fails, or my drive is stolen—I won’t lose my precious photos (note: I always keep my laptop and portable hard drive in separate locations). I use the G-Technology G-Drive and two LaCie models (a reputable brand): the Rugged and Rugged Mini.

All of these drives offer fast speeds and password protection, while the LaCie Rugged drives provide additional features such as shock, rain, and pressure resistance.

Universal Adapter

If you’ve traveled outside your home country, you know that a universal adapter is essential for connecting devices in various countries. However, keep in mind that an adapter only changes the shape of the plug to fit the outlet—it does not convert electricity. To convert electricity for your device, you’ll also need an electrical converter or transformer. Feeling confused? This article can clarify things for you.
