When you think of hiking in Bali, Campuhan Ridge Walk may not be your first choice — perhaps it’s often eclipsed by the challenging hike up Mount Agung. However, I believe this easy walk is a hidden gem that deserves more attention.
It’s referred to as a walk rather than a hike for good reason. The path is well-maintained, meaning you don’t need specialized walking shoes. This was a relief for me since I was traveling light during my year of slow travel and wasn’t equipped for a serious trek.
Where is Campuhan Ridge Walk?
As you stroll along the Campuhan Ridge Walk, the loud streets of Ubud seem to fade away. The path is framed by lush rice fields on either side, providing a serene countryside atmosphere that enhances the experience.
How challenging is the Campuhan Ridge Walk in Ubud, Bali?
On a scale from 1 to 10, where 10 is the most difficult, I’d rate this walk between 4 and 5. For those with limited mobility, the distance may be a challenge, but as someone who considers themselves semi-fit, I found it manageable. That said, I did find myself a bit winded during the trek — I might have been fatigued after having nothing but Oreos for breakfast!
Keep in mind there are different routes for this walk. The full loop is about eight kilometers long and can take over three hours. We opted for a shorter two-kilometer hike before turning back.
Who can do the Campuhan Ridge Walk?
This trail is accessible for people of all fitness levels. I noticed children and even parents with strollers enjoying the path!
How to prepare for the Campuhan Ridge Walk?
There’s not much preparation needed. I walked the trail in Birkenstocks without any issues. Although there are some steep spots and stairs, overall the walk is quite simple. Just remember to bring mosquito repellent, sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen, as there is limited shade. And, of course, stay hydrated; the heat can be quite intense!
Campuhan Ridge Walk Duration
We took about two hours to complete the hike, including time for photos, a swing, and hydration breaks. If you’re in a hurry, you could speed walk and finish it in a little over an hour. However, the views of Ubud’s lush jungle are so stunning that you’ll likely want to savor the experience.
Is there an entrance fee for the Campuhan Ridge Walk?
Absolutely not! It’s completely free!
Facilities at the Campuhan Ridge Walk
There are no washrooms along the trail, so plan bathroom breaks accordingly before and after your hike. Cafes are available at the end of the walk, but we turned back when confronted by a particularly intimidating bulldog blocking our path.
There’s a popular café called Karsa Café along the route, featuring a floating hut overlooking a lotus pond. I regret not pushing past that dog for a visit!

Where I stayed when I did the Campuhan Ridge Walk
During my trip, I stayed at the Four Seasons by Sheraton in Kuta, which turned out to be quite inconvenient as it took nearly two hours to reach Ubud. The following week, we opted for the Swaha Hotel in Sukawati; I wish I had done that sooner since the drive from Sukawati to Campuhan Ridge Walk is just about thirty minutes with minimal traffic, thanks to its lesser-known status among tourists.
Campuhan Ridge Walk Entrance Route
To find the trailhead, head to Warwick Ibah Luxury Villas. Look for signs that guide you up the hill; the entrance to the walk is clearly marked and easy to locate.
Make sure to pay attention to the signs as some may be small and easily overlooked. Locals may offer rides to the entrance, but it’s only a ten-minute walk to the start of the route, so you can politely decline.
Don’t miss the Campuhan Ridge Walk Swing!
Be aware that there may be a line for the swing, as it is a popular spot for photographs.
The best time to hike the Campuhan Ridge Walk
Our hike took place during midday in extreme heat; I recommend visiting in the morning or late afternoon instead. It was uncomfortably hot, and I regretted not arriving earlier. The path lacks adequate shade, so be prepared to be in the sun the entire time.
If you’re looking to avoid crowds, try to steer clear of weekends when both locals and tourists flock to the area.
