Among the most remarkable achievements of Roman civilization are the ancient aqueducts. Designed to transport water from mountainous sources to the towns below, these monumental structures showcase the ingenuity of Roman engineering. They provided fresh water to cities, filling fountains and public baths while also supplying homes, mills, and agricultural land.
Although built for practical reasons, the aqueducts also possess an aesthetic beauty. Towering structures with multiple tiers of arches spanned valleys to support the water channels above, gracefully leading the water downhill. Even though the remaining aqueducts are no longer functional, they continue to stand as magnificent landmarks, reflecting the skill and vision of ancient Roman engineers.
Some of the most stunning Roman ruins can be found far beyond Italy’s borders. One of the finest examples of a Roman aqueduct, the Pont du Gard, is located in France, near the town of Uzès.
