Located in Muğla Province in Turkey’s Aegean region, Marmaris is a sought-after holiday spot for those wanting to unwind along the stunning Turquoise Coast. During my two-week journey along the Turkish coast, I made my way to Marmaris after a scenic 3.5-hour drive from the charming town of Kaş.
Marmaris is rich in offerings, from tranquil beaches and breathtaking natural scenery to historical sites and vibrant local culture. If you’re seeking something different from the common vacation spots in Cuba, Jamaica, and Mexico, all-inclusive resorts are also available here.
In this travel guide, I will share my experiences and insights from my time in Marmaris, Turkey, including a video for a full virtual experience.

Best Time to Visit Marmaris
The ideal times to visit Marmaris are between February and June or September and December, with the peak travel season spanning from May to October. The hottest months are generally July and August, with temperatures often reaching around 36°C.
During my visit to Marmaris in December 2023, I found it to be the off-season, making it quite peaceful with fewer tourists. However, keep in mind that some activities, attractions, and tours may not be available during this time, such as the fountain show at the town square.
The resort area of the beach felt like a ghost town, as shown in my video. Interestingly, the local areas like the city center and Old Town were quite lively, filled with locals.
Despite the winter season, the weather during my visit was pleasantly mild, ranging from 18 to 20 degrees Celsius. Coming from Canada, I appreciated this comfortable weather, as I was fine in shorts and a t-shirt, while locals opted for jackets. So, if you’re after a peaceful and relaxed holiday in Marmaris, winter could be the perfect time for you.
Is Marmaris Safe To Visit?
Absolutely! Marmaris is one of the safest tourist destinations in Turkey. This coastal town is known for its calm, peaceful atmosphere and welcoming locals.
The local law enforcement is proactive, and they have a dedicated Tourist Police to assist travelers with various issues, including safety and potential scams.
During my stay, I explored Marmaris Long Beach and Old Town on foot from morning until night, and I felt completely safe the entire time.
Attractions & Things To Do
Marmaris offers a wide range of attractions, from historic landmarks and natural beauty to shopping and nightlife.
Bar Street
If you want to enjoy nightlife in Marmaris, Bar Street is the place to be. This lively area is packed with a variety of bars and clubs that cater to all tastes.
Blue Port AVM
Blue Port AVM is a shopping center that provides a great escape from the summer heat. The three-story mall features a cinema, toy stores, restaurants, a food court offering Turkish cuisine, and a variety of shops.

Grand Bazaar
The Grand Bazaar in Marmaris is quite different from the ones in Istanbul. This modern bazaar is home to over 400 shops selling a wide variety of items like luggage, shoes, jewelry, and more.
As is customary in Turkish bazaars, bargaining is essential to secure the best prices. Always negotiate from the initial price!
Main Square (Town Square)
The Main Square, or Town Square, located in Kemeraltı, is the heart of Marmaris. It’s an excellent spot to relax, with ample outdoor seating where you can savor food and drinks from local restaurants.
During the summer nights, the central fountain features the Dancing Marmaris Fountains, complete with a colorful water and light show synchronized to music, reminiscent of the famous Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas. The shows typically run between 9:00 PM and 10:30 PM for 15 minutes.

Marmaris Castle and Archeology Museum
Situated by the harbor, the Marmaris Castle and Archeology Museum is a must-see for history enthusiasts.
Although I arrived after closing time at 5 PM, the staff kindly allowed me to peek inside, and I found it quite impressive.
The castle is well-maintained and showcases historical artifacts in an open-air setting, making for a unique museum experience.

Marmaris Harbor
The Marina and Harbor is a vibrant area filled with yachts, boats, beaches, restaurants, and bars. If you prefer a more relaxed nightlife atmosphere, this is the perfect spot for you instead of Bar Street.
As the marina, this location is also the hub for boat tours and activities, although note that they only operate during the summer peak season. When I visited in December, none were available.

Marmaris Long Beach (Uzunyali Beach)
With a sandy shoreline stretching 10 km, Marmaris Long Beach, also known as Uzunyali Beach, is one of the most famous beaches in the area.
This beach is a must-visit, with numerous restaurants, cafes, shops, bars, and hotels lining its shores. Marmaris Long Beach connects directly to the Harbor where most boats dock.
The best way to explore the area is by walking along the waterfront, which reminded me of the long beach boardwalks found in California and Florida.
Restaurants, Places To Eat & Drink
As a popular coastal destination, Marmaris boasts numerous eateries and drinking spots. Beyond traditional Turkish restaurants, the seaside offers plenty of seafood dining options and beachside restaurants that provide stunning views.

Alzena Restaurant Bar
A cozy gem located behind the boardwalk, Alzena Restaurant Bar is a family-run eatery known for its authentic Turkish cuisine. Live entertainment is occasionally offered, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
The Levrek (Sea Bass) and Icli Kofte (Turkish Stuffed Meatball) were simply delicious. Trying Icli Kofte for the first time felt like enjoying a traditional empanada, especially given the unique addition of walnuts in the meat mixture.

Arada Burger
Located in a less touristy part of Marmaris, Arada Burger is famed for its fresh, uniquely Turkish burgers. Owned by the friendliest staff, this local fast-food joint is a must-try.
I highly recommend the Selimiye Burger! The kofte patty, coupled with smoked meat, cheese, and truffle sauce on toasted buttered buns, is absolutely delicious.

Dali Kunefe and Baklava
Close to the Main Square, Dali Kunefe and Baklava is a haven for dessert enthusiasts, offering homemade baklava, kunefe, chocolates, and more.
The kunefe is made fresh-to-order, and watching them prepare it is a delightful experience. You must try this dish with its gooey cheese and crispy layers—it’s not overly sweet or oily, which makes it perfect!

Kebapland
Situated near the Main Square, Kebapland is a popular local spot for doner, specializing in Hatay Style Doner, which surprised me when I first tried it.
What is Hatay Style? It features mayonnaise, ketchup, and garlic sauce—a stark contrast to the traditional versions. Apparently, this is the style favored by younger Turkish people.
The combination of ketchup and mayonnaise in a doner was unexpected yet delicious, with the spices enhancing the flavor. Plus, the prices here are cheaper compared to those in Antalya.

Roma Beach & Cafe
Located along the boardwalk, Roma Beach & Cafe is a fantastic restaurant where you can relax and enjoy the stunning beach views. The venue features two areas: a main dining room and a beachside cafe for al fresco dining right on the sand.
The Bonfile Lokum / Beef Filet (355TL) is tender and juicy, likely one of the best-priced items among beach restaurants. I highly recommend grabbing a Happy Hour beer to savor at their beach cafe.

Saman Iskelesi Cafe
Situated along the local side of the boardwalk, Saman İskelesi Çay Bahçesi is a must-visit cafe where locals gather.
This charming Turkish cafe, right by the water, offers an affordable menu for food and drinks. It’s a popular spot among locals, but the quick turnaround means that a full house won’t deter you from enjoying its ambiance.

Where To Stay in Marmaris
Myra Hotel
Myra Hotel is a budget-friendly 3-star hotel located just a 10-minute walk from the boardwalk. The hotel features clean, no-frills rooms equipped with free Wi-Fi.
What’s great about Myra Hotel is its complimentary breakfast that includes continental and Turkish options, plus a fresh egg station. Guests also have access to an all-day beverage station (tea, water, coffee, juice), an outdoor pool, all at an affordable rate.

How To Spend 2 Days in Marmaris Itinerary
Whether you plan a quick day trip or stay a couple of days, Marmaris serves as an excellent stopover on a Turkish Riviera road trip. A 4 to 5-day stay would offer ample time to fully relish the charm of Marmaris as a relaxing getaway.
Here’s a simple itinerary for a 2-day visit to Marmaris, based on my experience:
