Upon reaching Nocelle, you can opt to take a tourist bus down to Positano or continue hiking. If you choose to hike from Nocelle to Positano, here are the updated total hike specifications:

- Elevation Change: 570 meters downhill
- Difficulty Level: Moderate
It’s important to note that even though the section from Nocelle to Positano is completely downhill, the steep elevation change can be quite challenging on the knees.

Since this is a linear hike rather than a loop, you’ll need to determine how to get to Bomerano and how to return after your trek.
Personally, I took the bus to Bomerano to start the hike, then returned by ferry from Positano to Amalfi. From Amalfi, I caught the bus back to my accommodation.
You can also drive to Bomerano, hike to Positano, then take a ferry to Amalfi and use public transport to retrieve your car.
While public buses generally operate well, you may opt for the private bus company Travelmar for a slightly elevated fare, which can help reduce stress, especially during peak summer season when buses can be crowded.
Should you choose public transport, ensure you purchase your bus tickets in advance, as they cannot be bought directly on the bus.

Winter also presents challenges, as the trails may be closed due to bad weather conditions.

Best Time of Day
Regardless of the season, I recommend starting early in the morning. I set out at 7 AM to avoid the midday heat, discovering that most of the trail is shaded in the morning, so even if you leave a bit later, it’s usually pleasant.
Avoid hiking in the afternoon when the sun intensifies, making the journey much less enjoyable.

Should You Hike from Bomerano to Positano or Vice Versa?
Opt for hiking from Bomerano to Positano. This route offers the most scenic views and is also the easiest. The reverse—hiking from Positano to Bomerano—involves a considerable amount of uphill climbing, which can be quite strenuous.
As such, hiking from Bomerano allows you to enjoy stunning coastal views while avoiding the taxing ascent of countless steps.

Should You Join a Guided Path of the Gods Hike?
While you don’t necessarily need a guide for the Path of the Gods hike, having one can certainly be beneficial. The trail is well-marked and easy to navigate, so you can complete it independently or with a buddy.

Our Experience Hiking the Path of the Gods & Trail Description
We kicked off our adventure early in the morning along the Path of the Gods trail.
Since we were staying in San Lazzaro, we had a short bus ride and arrived at Bomerano to begin the hike at 7 AM.
Finding the starting point from the bus stop is straightforward. Simply head to the main square in Bomerano and look for a map featuring hiking routes in the area.
A small yellow sign will direct you towards “Sentiero degli Dei.” This marks the trailhead, which begins just to the right.
Throughout the trail, you’ll encounter similar signs, making navigation easy. Once you reach the cliff tops, you will have no trouble staying on course.
Just keep the sea to your left, and you’ll eventually reach the village of Nocelle!

One section of the trail that is less clear is the intersection at Colle La Serra. Before reaching the cliffs, you’ll walk for about 20 minutes through greenery and Mediterranean shrubs without any views.
Upon arriving at Colle La Serra, you will see signs indicating to go right for Nocelle, but there’s also an option to go left. Both paths will lead you to Nocelle eventually.
The difference, as mentioned by our Airbnb host, is that the left route is more scenic but slightly harder, while the right path is easier but less picturesque.
We chose the left route for the stunning views, but the choice is yours to make.

Overall, I found the Path of the Gods to be an easy hike, primarily flat or downhill with only a few challenging uphill sections. The stunning panoramic views throughout the journey make it well worth the trek!
The only aspect requiring preparation is the final section that connects Nocelle to Positano.
This is where I refer to “a billion steps”—though it feels like it! By the end, it can be quite taxing on the knees. This final stretch adds a moderate level of difficulty, but for most of the trail, it’s relatively easy.
Another minor obstacle involves a stretch along the main road, which lasts about 15 to 20 minutes where traffic can be busy, but following the steps, you will reach the picturesque Positano.
Time to relax by the sea, savor some gelato, and enjoy well-deserved rest!

Where to Stay to Hike the Path of the Gods Trail
Regardless of whether you stay in Bomerano or Positano, you’ll need to travel to the starting point of the hike or return from the endpoint.
Therefore, as long as you are close to a bus stop, your lodging location along the Amalfi Coast won’t make a significant difference. Personally, I recommend staying in Amalfi due to its excellent ferry and bus connections.
