Positano — Ideal for a Glamorous Romantic Getaway

best hotels in positano italy

Ahh, Positano! One of the world’s most scenic locales, you’ll instantly fall for its charm. Colorful, terracotta-roofed houses drape over the cliffside, cascading down towards the sea. Known for its steep, winding cobblestone streets and breathtaking beaches adorned with vibrant umbrellas.

Enjoy leisurely breakfasts on a terrace while soaking in panoramic views, browse local boutiques and galleries, and indulge in relaxed seafood lunches under the sun. Don’t forget to catch the breathtaking sunsets!

If you can step away from Positano itself, it’s a fantastic base to explore the Amalfi Coast by boat or take a day trip to the stunning island of Capri.

The ideal destination for a honeymoon, Positano is perfect for couples seeking a romantic escape. However, keep in mind that this beautiful town draws large crowds, especially in summer when day-trippers tend to leave before nightfall. If you desire tranquility, Positano may not be your best choice.

The steep streets and numerous steps might also pose challenges for families with small children or individuals with mobility issues. Getting to the upper parts of town typically requires walking.

Finally, Positano isn’t known for being budget-friendly. To secure the best accommodations, book well ahead—at least six months in advance.

Best Places to Stay Near the Amalfi Coast

Staying on the Amalfi Coast was a dream come true, and I highly recommend spending at least a night or two in one of the coastal towns if you’re in the area.

However, if time constraints restrict your stay or you wish to avoid the crowds and inflated prices that often accompany summer visits, here are some alternative nearby places to enjoy.

Sorrento — Ideal Base for Those Short on Time

sorrento - places to stay amalfi coast

While Sorrento may not technically be part of the Amalfi Coast, its strategic location between this beautiful coastline, Naples, and the islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida makes it a favorite among visitors.

Ferries provide convenient access to the Amalfi Coast towns and islands while the ruins of Pompeii are just a 45-minute train or car ride away. Half-day tours from Sorrento to Pompeii are also quite popular.

The bustling city fills with tourist crowds during the day; thus, consider Sorrento if you have limited time and wish to visit Capri, Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, and Herculaneum within just a few days.

If you’re in the mood for beach time, both Marina Grande and Marina Piccola offer splendid options as well. Sorrento is a vibrant urban area, and for those who enjoy city life, it serves as the perfect introduction to the lively southern Italian lifestyle filled with chaos, noise, and fun.

Additionally, Sorrento offers a wide array of accommodations, and compared to Positano or Amalfi, finding budget-friendly places to stay is considerably more manageable.
