The Masterpiece of Michelangelo

The iconic dome of St. Peter’s Basilica is a Renaissance architectural masterpiece, designed by the legendary Michelangelo. Commissioned by Pope Paul III in 1546, Michelangelo devoted the final years of his life to this project. Tragically, he passed away before it was completed. The task was then taken over by Giacomo della Porta and Domenico Fontana, who finished it in 1590, fifteen years after Michelangelo’s death. The resulting dome stands as a testament to the collaborative brilliance of the Renaissance era, combining Michelangelo’s initial vision with the creativity of those who followed him.

The Ascent

For those ready to embrace the challenge, there are two ways to begin your ascent: a climb of 551 steps or a more relaxed option that involves an elevator ride partway up, followed by 320 steps. We chose the elevator, allowing us to save energy for the more demanding climb that lay ahead.

The Final Climb – The Roof!

Many visitors are unaware that after descending from the cupola, you can walk across the roof of St. Peter’s Basilica. This extraordinary perspective lets you stand close to the enormous statues that embellish the façade, each an impressive work of art itself. From the roof, you can also look up at the dome, towering majestically above you, and appreciate the engineering marvel it represents.

Fun Facts and Legends

  • Michelangelo himself designed this dome, which rises 135 meters (450 feet) above the ground and spans 42 meters (139 feet) in diameter.
  • It is believed that Michelangelo intentionally made St. Peter’s dome 1.5 meters (5 feet) shorter in diameter than the Pantheon, as a gesture of respect to the ancient structure. He famously said, “I could create one larger, but not more beautiful than that of the Pantheon.”
  • While Michelangelo’s design provided the foundation, the completion of the dome involved numerous skilled architects and craftsmen, making it a true collaborative masterpiece of its era.

An Unforgettable Experience

Ascending to the top of St. Peter’s Dome is not just a physical challenge; it is a fascinating journey through history, art, and architecture. For Catholic visitors, this experience offers a unique perspective into Rome’s rich cultural heritage. It allows you to view the Eternal City from an altitude that few get to experience, walk in the footsteps of countless others, and gain a deeper appreciation for the ingenuity and beauty of Renaissance art.
