Have you ever heard of Canadian pizza? I always viewed pizza as an Italian dish, with cities like Chicago and New York making their mark with distinctive styles. However, the idea of pizza being uniquely Canadian never crossed my mind. Sure, poutine comes to mind, but pizza? Not so much.
You would expect to find Canadian pizza in Canada, probably in the foodie capitals like Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal. But it might surprise you to learn about a little gem called Ron Telesky Canadian Pizza, located right in the heart of Berlin.
Celebrating Canada Day in Berlin at Ron Telesky Canadian Pizza
I must admit that I learned about this place from a German couple visiting from Munich. They mentioned it was decorated with charming Canadian memorabilia and even served a pizza topped with maple syrup. How could such a place exist? And how peculiar that it’s run by a German rather than a Canadian introducing a taste of home to Berlin!
I was eager to visit Kreuzberg and decided to check it out on Canada Day. I invited a couple of friends from Toronto to join me for this unique experience. To our delight, when we arrived, we discovered a lively Canadian meetup in progress. Apparently, we weren’t the only ones who thought of celebrating our national holiday with themed pizza! People were sitting outside on wooden stumps and lawn chairs, with some even gathered in a canoe.
The iconic representations of Canadian culture continued inside the restaurant. Just as the Bavarian couple had promised, the decor was quite kitsch, yet I appreciated the nostalgic reminders of home.
The menu featured a variety of pizzas, including the Cronenberg Cash, Back To The Future, Montreal Blow, and the Wayne Gretzky. As a former ice hockey fan, I was particularly excited about the Wayne Gretzky, which is topped with feta, mozzarella, and cheddar cheeses, Italian salami, speck and chorizo, hot peppers, chili flakes, and caramelized onions.
You can enjoy a slice for around €3, but sharing a large pizza for about €20 is a far more enjoyable experience. While this may seem pricey, it’s a fantastic value since the pizza is large enough to feed a small gathering. The friendly owner served us our Wayne Gretzky pizza (seen in the image above).
To my surprise, they also offered some classic North American sodas. I indulged in both Cream Soda and Root Beer! If you prefer beer with a unique flavor, you can try Moosehead.
