Located between Kansas City and Topeka, Lawrence, Kansas, is an attractive destination for travelers. I visited Lawrence several years ago, and while I enjoyed my trip, it didn’t leave a lasting impression. However, I recently returned and discovered my love for this vibrant city. Home to the University of Kansas, Lawrence offers a wealth of experiences for visitors, especially on a perfect day.

The restaurants serve delicious food, and the streets are lined with fun shops, making for pleasant outdoor experiences that truly delighted me. Melody from the “Wherever I May Roam” blog and I spent a few enjoyable days in the area.

Where To Stay In Lawrence

The Oread Lawrence, part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton, offers comfortable accommodations near the University of Kansas. Its location is perfect for anyone wanting to explore the campus on foot.

This hotel overlooks the University of Kansas campus, while the vibrant downtown area is just a short drive away, enhancing your stay.

On-site paid parking is available, along with a covered parking garage. The Bird Dog Bar, located within the hotel, offers a fantastic breakfast experience. Tip: Be sure to take the elevator to the rooftop for a breathtaking view.

If you’ve been following my journey for a while, you’ll know I travel for bread pudding. I found a scrumptious bread pudding at Terrebonne Po’ Boys.

Once again, Lawrence delivers a taste of the south right in the Midwest. Food options abound, from pizza and burgers to Cajun cuisine and much more.

The Baker University Wetlands & Discovery Center is a paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts. Your perfect day in Lawrence is complete with outdoor exploration. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this nature center, filled with diverse bird species, plants, and endless trails. The parking lots and trails are accessible from sunrise to sunset—just remember to carry out what you bring in. With over 11 miles of hiking trails, you’ll find yourself immersed in the stunning beauty of this area in Kansas.

The indoor Baker Wetlands Discovery Center is free to enter and provides interactive experiences for visitors of all ages.

Throughout the year, various events and classes are offered, requiring prior registration. Make sure to bring bug spray, sunscreen, binoculars, comfortable walking shoes, and bottled water. Enjoy the great outdoors in this unexpected setting—you’ll be grateful you took the time to visit and explore.

The Best Hiking Experience in Kansas

Political History in Lawrence

The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics offers a fascinating insight into American politics. Admission is free, and the institute is open Tuesday to Sunday from noon to 4 PM.

Inside, you’ll find the world’s largest stained-glass American flag, which draws visitors to this captivating museum. The museum tells the story of Kansas politician Bob Dole and his contributions to America, along with those of his wife, Elizabeth.
