Quebec City is a true gem. Often overshadowed by larger cities like Toronto and Montreal, it holds historical significance as the landing point for European explorers in the 16th and 17th centuries. As the capital of Quebec province and a vibrant cultural center, its Old Town is one of the best-preserved historic areas in North America.
As someone who enjoys both food and history, Quebec City has captured my heart. It’s an exciting destination to explore year-round, but it truly sparkles in winter, when its old-world charm is blanketed in snow.
This city is a popular getaway for both Canadians and international visitors, with a wide array of hotels available. While some provide a remarkable experience, others may fall short.
To help you navigate the numerous lodging options on booking sites, here’s my selection of the best hotels in Quebec City.
1. Hotel AtypiQ
Opened in 2022, this three-star hotel offers outstanding value for its location. It features a creative concept with very small rooms, just big enough to fit a bed that folds down from the wall. The minimalist decor includes light colors and plenty of natural light, complemented by wood accents. The compact bathrooms are modern and equipped with rainfall showerheads, complimentary toiletries, and eye-catching murals.
The in-room amenities are limited, featuring only a flatscreen TV, but there’s a communal kitchen available for meal prep or coffee, along with a garden and terrace for enjoying nice weather.
A simple free breakfast is included (consisting of bread, fruits, and meats), but you’ll need to prepare it yourself in the shared kitchen. Overall, this hotel feels efficient and budget-friendly, making it a great choice for travelers seeking the privacy of a private room and bathroom.
2. Fairmont Le Château Frontenac
This hotel is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city—and perhaps the entire country. Opened in 1893, the luxurious Château is not only a significant historic site, but guided tours are available even for those not staying at the hotel. If you choose to stay at this five-star establishment, expect to live like royalty in a historic palace. The lavish lobby boasts impressive chandeliers and grand staircases that evoke classic elegance.
While the rooms are stylish and spacious, some may find the decor slightly dated due to the neutral carpet and color palette. In-room amenities include a rainfall shower, workspace, and coffee maker. The award-winning Château also offers multiple gourmet restaurants and bars, an indoor pool, hot tub, spa, steam rooms, and a fitness center. Although breakfast can be pricey, it’s exceptional with a wide variety of options to cater to all dietary needs.
If you’re after timeless luxury, this is the place to be.
3. Hôtel du Jardin – Par Les Lofts
This three-star hotel consists of spacious loft apartments, making it an excellent choice for groups or families who desire more room than a conventional hotel. The check-in process is contactless, adding to the convenience. The lofts showcase a minimalist design with light hues, wooden accents, and striking grayscale animal portraits. The bright tiled bathrooms feature strong rain showers, desks, comfortable beds, coffee makers, and flatscreen TVs.
While breakfast is not offered, there are numerous dining options within walking distance, given that the Saint Roch neighborhood is one of the best areas in the city for food enthusiasts. Overall, this accommodation is simple yet comfortable for couples or groups who need extra space, especially suitable for longer stays in a local-feeling neighborhood, distinct from the touristy Old Town.
4. Auberge J.A Moisan
Step back in time at this delightful four-star bed-and-breakfast, which maintains its Victorian-era decor from when it was originally built in the mid-19th century. Expect floral duvets, vibrant wallpaper, and exposed brick and wood accents. Guests can savor a delicious continental breakfast (including fresh croissants) in the Victorian parlor, relax on the outdoor terrace, or utilize the guest kitchen for meal preparation.
The rooms are cozy and feature few amenities (for instance, there are no TVs in the individual rooms, but a shared one with a Roku stick is available in the parlor). The comfortable beds, antique lamps, and period furnishings create a warm atmosphere, and some bathrooms even include deep claw-foot tubs (though they might feel a bit cramped). This charming bed-and-breakfast may be small, but it compensates with character and attentive service, providing one of the most unique accommodations in the city.
5. Chateau des Tourelles
This charming three-star inn is conveniently located just a 10-minute walk from Old Town. The rooms are tastefully decorated with abundant natural light, hardwood floors, vibrant walls, and exposed brick. Each room comes equipped with a flatscreen TV, desk, and plush bedding. Some suites feature private terraces and jacuzzis for an added touch of luxury. Although breakfast is not provided, every room has a Nespresso machine and access to coffee and tea 24/7 in the common area. The location also provides walking distance to a variety of dining options.
One of my favorite features is the shared rooftop terrace, which offers stunning panoramic views of the city. Additionally, you can reserve a parking spot for your vehicle. The hotel also allows for digital check-in, which is especially convenient for guests arriving at unconventional hours.
Quebec City is a stunning and lively destination worth exploring no matter the time of year. With its rich culinary scene, fascinating history, and the vibrant atmosphere of Old Town, alongside an enticing lineup of year-round festivals, Quebec City truly exceeds expectations. Make sure to choose one of the hotels listed above for your stay to ensure a wonderful and comfortable visit to Quebec’s capital!
