Ceduna has quickly become a family favorite—it’s a charming seaside town where we felt warmly welcomed by the local community. There are ample opportunities for fantastic fishing, and the hospital team has been exceptional, with great doctors, midwives, and nurses.
We were fortunate enough to witness the stunning Aurora Australis near Ceduna—truly an incredible sight!
2. Did you engage in any interesting activities while in South Australia?
We ended up spending more time in South Australia than anticipated, and every moment was enjoyable. The fishing was fantastic, the beaches gorgeous, and we spent a weekend exploring the Gawler Ranges. We also went swimming with sea lions and dolphins and explored countless caves along the coast. We particularly enjoyed visiting unique rock formations like Murphy’s Haystacks and Pildappa Rock.
Additionally, we were incredibly lucky to witness the successful launch of the HyImpulse SR-75 rocket.
This German-engineered rocket, standing at 11.5 meters, is the first of its kind to be launched from Southern Launch’s test range at Koonibba, South Australia.
The launch aimed to test HyImpulse’s innovative propulsion technology, which utilizes paraffin wax combined with liquid oxygen, providing a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional rocket fuels. This technology could potentially revolutionize the space industry.
We had been following this rocket’s journey from Germany and were hopeful to be in the area for the launch. The date kept shifting due to the need for perfect conditions.
Fortunately, no unexpected births occurred on the day of the launch, allowing us to head to the viewing site in Koonibba.
The Southern Launch team had been in Ceduna that week, giving us the chance to chat with them over dinner at the sailing club. They were very friendly, making the experience memorable with a welcome ceremony, counting down from T minus 15 minutes… T minus 2 minutes… T minus 20 seconds…
This marked the world’s first launch of a rocket of its kind. It was truly an unforgettable experience.
3. What do you enjoy most about the travel contracting lifestyle?
It’s been fantastic to see how different facilities operate and how practices vary from state to state. Working and traveling allows us to stay in one place longer, giving us the chance to thoroughly explore the area and revisit favorite spots.
4. As you prepare for your 4th placement with us, what has been the highlight of working with Affinity so far?
I’ve been fortunate to have an outstanding consultant, Josh. His communication has been fantastic. Waiting to hear about my next contract placement can be nerve-wracking, but Josh has always kept me informed.
5. Do you have a favorite photo from your travels? What’s the story behind it?
It’s hard to choose just one favorite! The attached photo was captured at Pildappa Rock in South Australia at the end of a 3-day camping trip in the Gawler Ranges, and we were all quite dirty from the adventure!
Pildappa Rock is an inselberg and is approximately 1500 million years old. Pildappa Rock sits at approximately above the ground at its tallest point. You can climb the rock and enjoy 360° views of the surroundings, including the Gawler Ranges (which were formed due to volcanic eruptions approximately 1600 million years ago). On top of the rock are numerous rock holes that provided a permanent water supply for Aboriginal people during the dry months. Nowadays, this water benefits the local flora and fauna after rainfall.
6. What advice would you give to other nurses and midwives interested in travel contracting?
If you have a few years of clinical experience, then go for it! Adaptability and flexibility are key as you may encounter situations you haven’t experienced before.
Don’t hesitate to ask questions! Having a car isn’t always necessary, but we appreciate having one as it enhances our ability to explore and navigate the area with ease.
