The Legend of Cat Ba Island:
The locals of Cat Ba Island are well-versed in an ancient tale that explains the island’s name. According to the legend, years ago, this island served as a vital supply point, providing food and resources for the army during wartime to protect the nation’s survival.
Women and daughters built warehouses filled with supplies for their husbands and sons, supporting them in their battles against invaders. This led to the island being known as Cac Ba Island, which later evolved into Cat Ba Island.
While the accuracy of this legend is unverified, historical evidence supports that Cat Ba Island was a significant site. It was a place where armor-plated stakes were manufactured and concealed, playing a crucial role in the victory at Bach Dang in 938, led by Ngo Quyen against the Southern Chinese invaders.
Moreover, in 1288, it was again significant during an event at Bach Dang River, where Commander Tran Hung Dao led a resistance against the Mongolian invasion. Historical accounts reveal that Cat Ba Island was the site where soldiers trained and devised strategies to entrap the invaders at Bach Dang River.
Due to its strategic location, Cat Ba Island was also used for storing supplies and hiding warships during the battles against Eastern invaders.

Local Traditions:
Rich in history, one longstanding local tradition is dragon boat racing. These races replicate the heroic spirit of the conflicts at Bach Dang River many years ago. Young men take on the role of soldiers, showcasing their commitment to protecting their homeland while cheered on by their mothers, wives, and sisters, making the festival an exhilarating event.
This festival is linked to a significant moment when President Ho Chi Minh visited the island on April 1, 1959. The race’s starting point is Ca Village, where President Ho Chi Minh met with the local fishing community.
