Naples and I didn’t hit it off right away. During my first visit 25 years ago for a study abroad program, we were heavily warned about the city’s so-called criminal activities, which limited our exploration. What we did see didn’t particularly resonate with me; perhaps my northern temperament played a role in that impression. A dozen years later, I returned to Naples as a leader for my own study abroad group, eager to deepen my understanding of the city, though I still didn’t have a strong affection for it.
