The Top Vegan Sandwiches in London: Coven of Witches

Date:

Searching for the best vegan sandwiches in London? Make your way to Walthamstow and check out Coven of Wiches!

I’m always hunting for the tastiest plant-based eateries in London. I’ve raved about the incredible vegan Sunday roast at The Black Heart and have a decent understanding of vegan pizza in the city. However, for something a bit more casual and takeaway-friendly, Coven of Wiches had been on my list of places to visit for quite some time.

Located at the back of Walthamstow’s Wood Street indoor market, Coven of Wiches offers a variety of plant-based sandwiches from their deli and pickle house. The menu features rotating sandwiches each week, with crowd favorites sticking around longer and limited-edition specials, ensuring there’s always something new to try.

Hailed as a beloved spot for plant-based lunch enthusiasts in North West London since its opening in 2023, Coven of Wiches quickly gained popularity. As word spread, more and more Londoners flocked to enjoy their offerings, and this summer, Time Out recognized Coven of Wiches as one of the best eateries in Walthamstow. Naturally, I had to pay a visit.

Here’s what we ordered during our visit:

  • The Reuben: House-made vegan pastrami on sourdough rye, complemented with vegan gouda, sauerkraut, remoulade, and pickles.
  • The Dawg: An 8-inch vegan frankfurter topped with 12-hour chili sin carne, served on a sub roll with fried onions, crispy onions, jalapeños, ketchup, mustard, and tortilla chips.
  • A.G.A.T.H.A: Aubergine schnitzel, hot raclette, avocado, tomato, gremolata, served on Middle Eastern bread with aioli, pickles, garlic croutons, and jalapeños.
  • VFB: Vegan ‘fish’ fingers in a buttered roll, served with cocktail sauce, shoestring fries, and pickles.
  • Reubini: A mini version of the classic Reuben sandwich.

Alongside these sandwiches, they offer a variety of sides including pickles, kimchi, and potato salad. For those with a sweet tooth, there are ice cream sandwiches and sundaes on the menu. Plus, you can enjoy a selection of beers, wines, spirits, and soft drinks to accompany your meal.

Prices for the sandwiches range from £9 to £10, though you can find a couple of smaller options priced between £6 and £7. These choices are perfect for those with a smaller appetite or sticking to a budget. (My friend ordered the VFB from the smaller menu, and it was still a generous portion!)

While the shop has a few indoor seats, our group of seven decided to seize the sunny weather and take our sandwiches to a nearby park.

Upon unwrapping my foil-packed sandwich, my initial thought was, “How on earth am I going to fit this in my mouth?” The portion sizes here redefine ‘generous’. These sandwiches are MASSIVE. In fact, I had to save part of mine for later because I was completely stuffed. Filled to the brim with delicious ingredients, the value for money at Coven of Wiches is fantastic.

I chose The Reuben (£9), as I fondly remember my first encounter with a Reuben sandwich in a New York deli, which was truly unforgettable. Coven of Wiches nailed the Reuben experience, combining the perfect balance of vegan ‘meat’ and sauerkraut. Each flavor complements the others splendidly, with the sourness of the kraut marrying beautifully with the savory, perfectly cooked vegan pastrami.

Ashley opted for The Dawg (£10), which turned out to be even larger than my Reuben. You can see the size comparison in this video – it must have been close to the length of my forearm!

Of course, I had to give it a taste. The 12-hour slow-cooked chili ‘sin carne’ was rich and satisfying, leaving plenty of chili to mop up with the tortilla chips afterward.

We did order the Potatty Salad (£4) as well, but unfortunately, the herb mix and pickles didn’t quite please my palate. If you’re considering trying the sides, I recommend sharing a sandwich along with one or two sides, as the portions are quite filling!

If you’re after top-notch plant-based sandwiches in London, Coven of Wiches is definitely worth a visit. Hearty, messy, and utterly delicious, it’s sure to cure even the fiercest hangover. Head to Walthamstow and experience the magic of the Coven for yourself!
