The Valley of Aurland is a stunning part of Norway, offering a unique experience for those who cherish waterfalls, lush valleys, tranquil nature, and awe-inspiring scenery. You have the option to embark on a three-day hike from Finse to Vassbygdi, but I’ll focus on the scenic hike from Østerbø to Vassbygdi, which many consider the highlight of the journey. If you’re planning to tackle just one section, the Østerbø to Vassbygdi trek is a must.

Explore the Wild Valley of Aurland: Aurlandsdalen
Did you know that “dalen” means valley? So, Aurlandsdalen translates to the Valley of Aurland. Beginning your hike in Østerbø allows you to immerse yourself in the breathtaking natural beauty of Aurland and Norway itself.
Accommodation & Dining During Your Hike in the Valley of Aurland
To reach Østerbø from Flåm, you can take a bus with Norway’s Best if you spend a day in Flåm before starting your hike. For accommodation, you can choose between Flåm, Aurland, or Østerbø. We chose to stay at Østerbø, where you can either book the Aurlandsdalen DNT Cabin or Østerbø Mountain Lodge. Both offer a delightful three-course dinner and everything you need for a weekend in the mountains. Other lodging options include Hotel Aurlandsfjord in Aurland and Fretheim Hotel in Flåm, while a budget-friendly choice in Flåm is the Flåmsbrygge hotel.
Hiking from Østerbø to Vassbygdi in the Aurlandsdalen Valley
Your adventure starts early with breakfast at 7:30 AM, followed by hiking at 8:00 AM. Make sure to catch the bus back to Østerbø if you don’t plan to spend another night there. You can send your main luggage with the bus to Vassbygdi, leaving you with just a daypack for the hike. It’s advisable to travel light due to the slippery stones and steep passages, as a heavy backpack can strain your knees.
The Hike from Østerbø to Vassbygdi: 19 Kilometers (12 Miles)
This hike spans about 19 kilometers, equivalent to around 30,000 steps from Østerbø to Vassbygdi. Expect to spend six to eight hours walking through unspoiled landscapes filled with rugged mountains, flowing rivers, and breathtaking waterfalls. Take the time to appreciate the scenery, and keep an eye out for informational signs detailing the local fauna and historical sites along the way.
Restroom Facilities in the Valley of Aurland
While trekking in nature, restroom facilities can be scarce. If you need to go, please bring a plastic bag to take any used paper with you. Always practice Leave No Trace principles. There are few designated restroom spots along the trail due to proximity to other hikers. However, some outhouses (compost toilets) are available, providing a view that’s hard to beat for those moments when “nature calls.” Additionally, you will find sanitation facilities at the service station in Vassbygdi.
Fitness Requirements for Hiking Aurlandsdalen
If you’ve never hiked before, I wouldn’t recommend starting with the Valley of Aurland. This hike can be strenuous even for seasoned hikers in Norway. The terrain varies widely, including slippery stones and steep descents. It’s crucial to be in good physical condition before attempting the Aurlandsdalen hike. If you have knee issues, this hike might not be suitable for you. Bringing trekking poles can help alleviate strain on your knees. I hiked this trail at 30 years old, and my knees were fatigued by the end of the trek, despite having no prior knee problems. You can also tackle the trail in reverse, starting from Vassbygdi and climbing back to Østerbø, but be prepared for elevation changes both ways.
