Things to Do in New York in July and August 2024

Take the time to explore New York on foot, but be mindful of the heat. Stay hydrated, seek shade whenever possible, and protect yourself from the sun, especially between 1 PM and 4 PM.

During these two months, it’s best to avoid the subway platforms where it can be extremely hot. If you must use the subway, try to minimize your wait times to stay cool. And if you see an empty subway car during rush hour, be cautious—there might be no air conditioning!

At night, enjoy the pleasant weather and attend some of the summer festivals happening around the city.

July 4th, also known as Independence Day, celebrates the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain in 1776. This historic document not only marked the birth of a new nation but also emphasized the pursuit of happiness as a fundamental right.

Movie Night at Bryant Park

Movie Night at Bryant Park features classic films shown on a giant screen every Monday at sunset from June to August. Bring a blanket, as the picnic area opens at 5 PM. Movies start around 8 PM to 9 PM, but be advised—if the weather isn’t favorable, screenings may be canceled.

Shakespeare in the Park

Shakespeare in the Park has delighted audiences for over 50 years with free performances at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park, attracting more than 100,000 visitors each summer. This annual event features productions by renowned artists, celebrating Shakespeare and other classics. Tickets are free and can be obtained in person or online. The theatre opens at 7:30 PM, with shows running from Tuesday to Sunday starting at 8 PM.
Note: Free Shakespeare in the Park will be unavailable this year due to extensive renovations, reopening in the summer of 2025.

Summer for the City

Summer for the City brings together talented musicians performing pieces from Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, and Handel. Concerts are hosted at venues like Lincoln Center, John Jay College Theater, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and New York State Theater.

The US Open

The famed US Open will be held from August 26 to September 8, 2024, in Flushing Meadow, conveniently located near LaGuardia Airport. As one of the four major championships along with the French Open, Wimbledon, and the Australian Open, the US Open is known for its fast deco turf surface.
