Are You Prepared for Yacht Adventures? Experience Croatia the Perfect Way!

Date:

This was our second vacation with Yacht Getaways, and it was just as memorable as the first. Last summer, we enjoyed a luxurious cruise through Greece’s Ionian Islands, and when we discovered Yacht Getaways had another route through Croatia, we couldn’t resist! In this post, we will recount our fantastic experience aboard the Dubrovnik Explorer as we sailed along the stunning Dalmatian coast, exploring some of Croatia’s most beautiful cities over a week-long adventure.

About Yacht Getaways

Yacht Getaways offers a boutique cruising experience that blends luxury with affordability. Before our cruise last year, I believed that sailing the Mediterranean was reserved for the wealthy. However, with cruises starting at €1200, everyday couples like us can enjoy the luxury of cruising through crystal-clear waters on a private catamaran.

Along with four other couples, we boarded our catamaran, where we were greeted by our skipper, Levi, and our host, Lauren, who catered to our every need as we enjoyed adventures such as swimming at the Elaphiti Islands, e-biking through Mljet National Park, and exploring the historical towns of Korcula, Hvar, and Stari Grad. Each day was filled with both excitement and relaxation, starting with Lauren preparing a hearty breakfast and tasty lunch as we sailed from one island to another. Here’s what you can expect during a seven-day voyage from Dubrovnik to Split.

Day 1: Departure from Dubrovnik – Setting Sail in Style

Our journey began in the breathtaking city of Dubrovnik. We arrived a few days early to explore this famous city, known as King’s Landing in Game of Thrones. Staying at the Dubrovnik Palace Hotel allowed us to enjoy the tranquility away from the crowds, with free shuttle service to the old town. We thoroughly enjoyed everything the Old Town had to offer before ordering an Uber to the Marina, where we boarded our luxurious catamaran.

This isn’t your typical crowded Mediterranean cruise; Yacht Getaways offers an intimate experience with a small group of guests on board. Thankfully, we ended up with a fantastic group of couples from around the globe. Our international company included guests from New Zealand, the United States, Australia, the UK, and Canada, making it a truly multicultural experience!

We set sail from Dubrovnik at 4 PM, enjoying the vibrant azure waters and breathtaking scenery. After anchoring, we took a dip in the warm waters of the Elaphiti Islands while Lauren prepared our welcome dinner onboard. This was just a glimpse of what lay ahead: pristine waters, secluded coves, and ample time to relax. That evening, we enjoyed our first dinner together and watched the sun set over the Adriatic.

Waking up to the gentle sound of waves while anchored near the pristine Elaphiti Islands is sheer bliss. These islands are renowned for their lush greenery and hidden beaches. Lauren had fresh coffee brewing, alongside a delightful selection of fruits, pastries, yogurt, and granola. Each morning provided a perfect opportunity for a refreshing swim or snorkel to kick-start the day ahead. We floated in the calm waters as a hearty breakfast was being prepared.

The beauty of Yacht Getaways is the freedom; there’s no rush. Some guests eagerly jumped into the water, while others preferred to soak up the sun on deck with a cup of coffee before we sailed to our next destination.

Next, we explored Mljet, one of Croatia’s most beautiful and serene national parks. Famous for its peaceful lakes and lush forests, Mljet is best discovered by bike. Fortunately, e-bikes made it easy to tackle even the steepest hills. We rode along tranquil paths through dense pine forests and around saltwater lakes, stopping occasionally to soak in the serene surroundings. We even took a boat to see the 12th-century Benedictine Monastery perched on a tiny island within the lake.

After a fantastic day on land, we returned to the catamaran to unwind with cocktails and wine before heading ashore for dinner. This was the perfect opportunity to try Croatia’s famous Under the Bell seafood dish, which features freshly caught seafood slow-cooked over an open flame.

Korcula – A Journey Back in Time

Korcula Island, CroatiaKorcula Island, Croatia

Sailing onward, another highlight of our trip was the island of Korcula, often referred to as “Little Dubrovnik” for its medieval walls and terracotta-roofed buildings. This beautiful walled city is rumored to be the birthplace of Marco Polo. Tourists flock here, drawn by its vibrant energy. Be sure to reserve a table in advance when you arrive, as waterfront restaurants fill up quickly!

Your Yacht Getaways cruise includes all breakfasts and lunches, along with two dinners. Throughout each meal, beer, wine, soft drinks, and juices are offered, plus unlimited water is always available on board.

Make sure to bring a refillable water bottle and consider packing your own coffee mugs. For other alcoholic beverages, you can purchase bottles at various points during your journey.

Hvar Town – Croatia’s Glitziest Island

Hvar Town, CroatiaHvar Town, Croatia

Hvar is known as Croatia’s party island, but it has much more to offer than just nightlife. We anchored just outside its glamorous harbor and took a water taxi into town. The area is vibrant, featuring shopping, dining, and numerous happy hours. You can hike up to the fort for spectacular sunset views or head to Sunset Beach.

At every stop, our host Lauren provided us with valuable information on activities, attractions, and dining options. There was no need for us to plan; she offered recommendations for the best happy hour, sunset spots, and dishes to try. Yacht Getaways takes care of everything for you.

During the evenings, the choice between vibrant nightlife in Hvar’s trendy bars or a peaceful night on the yacht under the stars was yours. With Yacht Getaways, you set your pace.

Stari Grad – Discovering Croatia’s Oldest Town

Streets of Stari Grad, CroatiaStreets of Stari Grad, Croatia

One of our favorite stops was Stari Grad, one of the oldest towns in Europe, dating back to 384 BC. Despite its age, Stari Grad is less crowded than the other cities we visited, offering a tranquil escape with its narrow alleyways, quiet cafes, and charming local shops.

We wandered through the UNESCO-listed old town, losing ourselves in its winding streets. To our surprise, we found numerous local art galleries and quaint restaurants where we enjoyed authentic Dalmatian cuisine. This destination served as a perfect contrast to the hustle and bustle of Hvar, providing a serene cultural experience before concluding our journey at sea.

During this visit, Yacht Getaways also offers a wine-tasting excursion, which you can choose to join or simply explore the city. We docked conveniently in town, making it easy to access all the top attractions and restaurants.

Day 7: Sailing into Split – The Grand Finale

Sailing into Split, CroatiaSailing into Split, Croatia

As we sailed towards Split, we enjoyed our last breakfast on deck, soaking in the stunning sights of the Dalmatian Coast. Although our journey was nearing its close, the memories of the turquoise waters, historic towns, and unforgettable moments would last long after we disembarked.

Split is Croatia’s second-largest city, celebrated for its UNESCO-listed Diocletian’s Palace and its lively coastal atmosphere. While we didn’t dock in Split, we ended our adventure in nearby Trogir. Dave and I chose to stay the night in this charming town and highly recommend visiting before heading to Split.

It’s a perfect spot to prolong your adventure, whether you’re looking to explore more of Croatia or head to your next destination.

What to Pack

  • As mentioned earlier, remember to pack a refillable water bottle and a thermos-style coffee mug.
  • A portable USB power supply is useful for charging your phone and electronic devices when not connected to shore power.
  • A portable rechargeable fan is recommended, especially since the air conditioning won’t run when not connected to shore power. Cabin fans are provided, but an extra fan can enhance your comfort while sleeping.
  • If you’re prone to seasickness, don’t forget to bring your medication.
  • Use soft, collapsible bags like duffel bags for easier storage.
  • Given the limited cabin space, we suggest using packing cubes to stay organized.
  • For your phone, consider bringing a waterproof phone holder or a GoPro to capture snapshots while swimming.
  • Water shoes are a good idea for stepping onto rocky beaches. If you want to go ashore while swimming, a good pair of water shoes is essential. Some passengers wore heavier shoes, which they found cumbersome for swimming. We recommend Body Glove water shoes as they work great.
  • A sun hat will help protect your face from the sun.
  • A long-sleeved shirt and a snorkeling or surf shirt are recommended to provide protection against sunburn while swimming.
  • Sunglasses, chapstick, and sunscreen are essential items.
  • There’s no need to overpack clothing; the atmosphere is casual. A couple of nice button-down shirts for men and sundresses for women are sufficient, as you’ll likely be in your bathing suits most of the trip.
  • Pack some shorts and shoes for hiking and cycling. Running shoes are typically adequate as the hiking is not very strenuous.
  • We also recommend packing multiple bathing suits since you will be swimming often—you’ll appreciate having a dry suit to change into.
