SETTEMBRE
by Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936)

Hopes fade away
Like swallows at the end of the year:
Will they return?
In my heart, both widowed and faithful,
The nests still linger
That once echoed
With short and joyful calls:
Wandering swallows, if ever
With the rays
Of my Sun you find your way back,
You will discover your joyful
little homes once more.

SEPTEMBER

Hopes depart
Like swallows at year’s end:
Will they return?
In my heart, both widowed and faithful,
The nests still hang,
Once filled
With brief and merry cries:
Wandering swallows, if ever
With the rays
Of my Sun you return,
You will find your happy
little houses.
