Nestled in the northern part of Simcoe County, the charming village of Coldwater, Ontario, is conveniently located just minutes off Highway 400, making it an easy getaway. Although the village may be small, I am always pleasantly surprised by the variety of activities available each time I visit. From exploring quaint shops and historic sites like the Coldwater Mill to participating in festive events such as the renowned Witches Walk, there’s plenty to enjoy.
After countless visits, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite activities and attractions in Coldwater. This guide will highlight what you can do and explain why fall is the optimal time to visit. Explore the Coldwater Mill
Visiting the mill located at the heart of town is a must-do when in Coldwater. This stunning red grist mill, built in 1833, sits beside the river and provides ample opportunities for beautiful photographs. Inside, you’ll find a free museum, a gift shop, and an art gallery. There’s also a restaurant, Mill St. Bistro, right next door.
It’s important to acknowledge that the Coldwater Mill has a poignant history, originally built for and funded by Indigenous peoples in the area. I highly recommend visiting the mill’s museum to delve into its rich history, filled with photographs and artifacts.
The gift shop at the mill is a fantastic place to find unique items, many crafted by local artisans. My personal favorite is the art gallery on the top floor, which proudly showcases Indigenous art.
Enjoy Coffee at Em’s Cafe
While strolling through downtown Coldwater, don’t miss a chance to stop by Em’s Café! This charming café is filled with cozy vibes, featuring warm colors, eclectic wooden furniture, and my personal favorite, an exposed brick wall.
Em’s Café serves an excellent selection of coffee, tea, and delicious grilled sandwiches. One of my favorite treats from here is their amazing scones, which vary regularly; my top pick is the chai scone with cinnamon glaze.
The café also boasts one of the most Instagram-worthy patios in Ontario! Adjacent to the café, this little alleyway is adorned with seating and a vibrant display of open umbrellas overhead.
Shop at Copperpot Nuts
In my opinion, shopping is one of the best things to do in Coldwater! The variety of shops offers delightful finds, from beauty products to home décor. My personal favorite is Copperpot Nuts! I stop in every time for their amazing nuts.
This fantastic women-owned shop features a unique selection of quirky kitchen items, along with local products like honey and maple syrup. However, their standout offering is the double-roasted nuts, prepared and packaged on-site. With almost 20 different flavors available, my personal favorite is the maple roasted pecans!
Visit the Coldwater Canadiana Heritage Museum
A wonderful destination for families is the Coldwater Canadiana Heritage Museum. Located on 6.5 acres just south of downtown, this once was the Woodrow Homestead, which now serves as a museum honoring pioneer families.
The museum showcases the original Woodrow Homestead filled with period artifacts, resembling a living history museum that illustrates rural life in the 1830s. You’ll also find a few original family pieces.
Visitors can enjoy a self-guided tour and explore the scenic grounds along the Coldwater River, as well as additional buildings set up as a pioneer village to further highlight the area’s history. Admission is by donation, and the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from mid-May to the end of August, with openings in September and October by appointment.
Relax at Quayle’s Brewery
One of the best spots in Coldwater for drinks and a bite to eat is Quayle’s Brewery! Situated on a hill just 10 minutes south of downtown Coldwater, the beautiful building is a recreation of the local 19th-century landmark known as the Musical Barn, which was built in 2016.
Covering 12 acres, Quayle’s Brewery features a wraparound patio overlooking the hop yards. You can enjoy a meal or drink inside or out on the patio year-round, complete with fire pits for winter enjoyment.
Quayle’s Brewery is more than just a place to eat and drink; it’s an experience! It features three floors of seating, a tasting room, and a loft. There is always something happening at the brewery, including live music with local talent, trivia nights, and various markets.
Besides their craft beer offerings, they provide a fantastic menu ranging from appetizers to full meals and desserts. I highly recommend trying their Beer Mac & Cheese, made with their house-made beer cheese!
Insider Tip: The brewery is one of two replicas of the Musical Barn in Coldwater; the other is located behind the Coldwater Mill.
Experience the Coldwater Fall Fair
One of the ultimate fall activities in Ontario is attending a fall fair, and the Coldwater Fall Fair is one of the finest small-town fairs I’ve ever experienced! For over 125 years, this fair has been a must-visit event in Coldwater.
Annually held on the last full weekend of September, the fair is a wonderful event for the entire family, featuring a thrilling midway, a demolition derby, and various agricultural exhibits. Inside the main arena, you’ll find local vendors selling everything from maple syrup to fresh produce, not to mention arts and crafts exhibits.
My favorite part of the fair is the animal exhibits, where you can see everything from horses to sheep. I particularly enjoyed getting up close with the adorable baby cows!
If you’re unfamiliar with the town, the fairgrounds are conveniently located in the heart of downtown.
Explore The Dark Bazaar
If you love Halloween, then The Dark Bazaar is a must-visit! This downtown shop is among the best places in Coldwater for those who are into the quirky and unusual. You can find spooky goodies year-round at The Dark Bazaar, featuring an array of fun and freaky items for sale.
Inside, you’ll discover everything from clothing to home décor, with plenty of references to horror films and Halloween themes. Many of the items are made locally and are genuinely one-of-a-kind. Each fall, the shop is beautifully decorated with fantastic Halloween pieces, including a giant skeleton and a coffin.
Join the Coldwater Witches Walk
If you’re seeking fun and free activities in Coldwater, don’t miss the annual Witches Walk! This popular event has been running for nearly 20 years and takes place on a Friday night in October. Get ready to see hundreds of attendees dressed up as witches parading through town.
In addition to the walk, there’s a costume contest, live music, dancing, and plenty of great photo opportunities. Numerous street vendors will also be present. Mark your calendars for this year’s event on October 18, 2024!

Hewitts Farm Market & Bakery – An essential stop in the farm-to-table scene in Simcoe County, Hewitts Farm Market is a fantastic place to visit for maple products during Tap into Maple, or any time of year for delightful goods. Inside, you’ll find a variety of items, including farm-fresh produce, baked goods, and home décor items, as well as products from other Ontario producers like Empire Cheese.
Hike the Uhthoff Trail – The Uhthoff Trail is one of the many lovely trails in Simcoe County. It stretches between Waubaushene and Orillia for 30 km and is part of the Trans Canada Trail. The trail is relatively easy and flat, making it perfect for hiking or cycling. You don’t need to tackle the whole trail, as there is access in Coldwater through the parking lot beside the fire department.
Browse The Christmas Villager – One of the cutest Christmas shops in Ontario is located in downtown Coldwater. The Christmas Villager captures the spirit of the season all year long. Inside, you’ll find everything from Christmas décor and greeting cards to unique gifts and toys for both kids and adults.
