Ascoli Piceno: Malatesta Fortress

Date:

Just outside the historic center of Ascoli Piceno lies the Forte Malatesta, a fortress that once stood guard over the Castellano River. To its west is the Cecco Bridge, a Roman structure completed during the final years of the Republic. This bridge was bombed by German forces during WWII but was reconstructed in 1971 using original materials.

Local legend claims that the bridge, part of Italy’s famed “devil’s bridges,” was constructed in a single night with the assistance of the devil. Below, you can see the bridge and the fort in the accompanying image:

The current design of the fort, built atop earlier fortifications, is attributed to Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane. Its Renaissance style marks it as one of Italy’s most impressive castles. Today, it houses the Museo dell’Alto Medioevo, or Museum of the High Medieval, showcasing artifacts from 476 to 1000, many of which originate from the Necropoli Longobarda di Castel Trosino. Below are some of these remarkable artifacts:

The twelve-sided Santa Maria del Lago church is another unique feature. Constructed in the early 1500s, it was built atop a fort reinforced by Galeotto Malatesta, which has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times.

The interior of this church showcases some stunning brickwork.

A visit to the fort is well worth the 6 euros charged for entry. You can see everything in a couple of hours or less, depending on how long you spend exploring the museum.

Ascoli Piceno is filled with medieval towers, Roman bridges, and some of the most charming piazzas in Italy. It’s definitely worth a visit, especially if you enjoy deliciously fried local dishes.
