Scanno Lake: Your Guide to Exploring Italy

Date:

One of the most renowned destinations in Abruzzo is the delightful village of Scanno. Known as the most photographed village in Italy, this charming location boasts a rich medieval history and is nestled amidst mountains and untouched nature, sitting on the edge of the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise.

The picturesque old town features a stunning array of architectural styles, including medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque influences. Its narrow alleyways are still frequented by local women in traditional attire, adding to the village’s charm. Visitors are captivated by the beautiful façades, historic churches, ornate fountains, and grand palaces adorned with balconies, arches, and columns—all a testament to the village’s prosperous sheep herding heritage. Craft shops offer traditional handicrafts such as lace-pillow embroidery and exquisite filigree jewelry. Don’t miss the opportunity to try some of the region’s most authentic dishes in Scanno’s cozy restaurants.

The splendid Scanno Lake, located at the base of the village, is a popular getaway for both sports enthusiasts and those looking to unwind. The lake’s azure waters and pleasant climate offer a wide range of activities, including swimming, surfing, canoeing, and various water sports. Alternatively, you can relax under the sun or explore the stunning surroundings by hiking or cycling through the breathtaking mountain landscape.

Scanno Lake was formed by a massive landslide from Mount Genzana, which blocked the Sagittario Valley. It is situated at an elevation of 922 meters above sea level, with a maximum depth of 36 meters. Thanks to its limestone bed, the water is exceptionally clear, earning the lake blue flags for water purity.

From the shore, the lake displays crystal-clear, azure waters. A drive up the mountain to the charming town of Frattura offers a breathtaking view of the lake, which takes on a heart-like shape with darker hues. Nearby, you’ll also find several beautiful ancient towns to explore.

While we couldn’t test it ourselves due to time limitations, Scanno Lake is famous for excellent fishing. The lake is home to a variety of fish species, including:
– TROUT (trota)
– TENCH (tinca)
– PERCH (persico reale)
– ROACH (rovella)
– RUDD (scardola)
