What Are the Wine Windows in Florence?
These small openings, found on the walls of many historic palaces since the seventeenth century, are referred to as buchette del vino, finestre del vino (wine windows), or finestrelle del vino (little wine windows) by the locals.
You might wonder, “What is the connection between wine and these windows?”
Prominent noble families in Florence, such as Antinori, Frescobaldi, and Rucellai, were historically involved in winemaking.
Why did they get into this business?
As the manufacturing industry in Florence began to decline, these astute families recognized that the wine production business could provide a more stable livelihood.
The wine windows were an ingenious solution.
They allowed wines to be sold directly to pedestrians without the need for intermediaries, such as innkeepers.
Interestingly, some noble families even used these windows to discreetly share food and wine with the less fortunate.
Isn’t that wonderful?
So what do these buchette del vino (little wine holes) look like?
Picture a small door, just large enough for a flask of wine, topped with a small arch.
Typically, they feature a stone frame with a modest wooden door.
Locals sometimes refer to them as “wine tabernacles” due to their simple yet dignified appearance.
Here’s a fun fact: These wine windows have existed for over four centuries!
There is even evidence that they were utilized during the plague of 1634 to help prevent the spread of disease.
Impressive foresight, isn’t it?
Fast forward to 2020, and these charming buchette del vino saw a resurgence during the COVID lockdown.
The celebrated Vivoli ice-cream parlor began serving coffee, drinks, and ice cream through its historic wine window.
And guess what? The public loved it!
Three additional businesses quickly followed suit.
How Many Wine Windows Are Left in Florence Today?
Thanks to the Buchette del Vino Cultural Association, we know that there are about 155 wine windows within the city walls and 26 outside of them.
Additionally, there are 114 more located outside Florence!
Sadly, 10 have been sealed off or destroyed over the years.
How to Order from Wine Windows in Florence
Now, let’s explore how to place an order at a wine window in Florence.
This can be a delightful experience, but there are a few things to keep in mind.
First and foremost, don’t be surprised if there’s a queue when you arrive.
These spots can get quite busy!
If you’re lucky and there aren’t too many people, simply knock on the window or ring the bell to let them know you’re there.
Most places have a menu displayed near the window. Convenient, right?
If you don’t see one, just ask the staff what they have.
Typically, the offerings include house wines (both red and white) as well as seasonal beverages.
As for payment, most wine windows are quite modern and accept credit cards.
However, it’s always wise to have some cash on hand, just in case—after all, you never know with older establishments!
Once your drinks are ready, the staff will call your attention.
Be prepared to receive your drinks one at a time through the small window, so ensure your hands are free.
If you ordered multiple drinks, consider asking a friend to help you.

In the age of Instagram, everyone wants to experience the charm of the wine windows.
As of January 2024, there are nine venues in Florence operating authentic wine windows, serving wine, coffee, aperitifs, and gelato.
This has turned into a real trend in the restaurant scene!

1. Osteria delle Belle Donne
Located near Santa Maria Novella, this spot is famous for its long lines of tourists eager to grab their wine from the finestrella del vino (little wine window).
