Colosseum Information, History, & Quick Facts

Before entering the Colosseum, it’s helpful to learn more about its history! I’ve always found Roman history captivating, ever since my school days and watching the film Gladiator.

Megan shares my passion for Roman history—she considers Herculaneum her all-time favorite site, anywhere across the globe.

The Colosseum is among the most significant pieces of Roman history in the world, having been constructed between 70 and 80 AD by Emperor Vespasian in an amphitheater style.

My trip to the Colosseum

The Colosseum is astonishingly designed to host an audience of 65,000 people, an extraordinary feat at that time!

During the Roman Empire, it was the venue for gladiatorial games, various spectacles, and other forms of entertainment.

In the 14th century, the Colosseum suffered extensive damage from an earthquake. Many stones that crumbled were repurposed for building churches, hospitals, and other structures throughout Italy.

Here are a few interesting facts about the Colosseum:

  • The entrance was historically free for citizens of the empire who couldn’t afford it, as emperors often sought political favor through the games.
  • Over 500,000 people and a million animals were killed in the Colosseum.
  • Though the Colosseum is often linked to the famed Roman Emperor Julius Caesar, he interestingly never visited it.

Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Keep in mind that when you purchase a ticket to the Colosseum, it may also grant you access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Below is a brief overview of both sites.

Roman Forum

The Roman Forum was an important governmental complex vital to Roman history. I was truly impressed by its size and the thriving political system that operated in ancient times when so many modern governments struggle!

The Forum was the heart of Roman life, where residents could attend elections, trials, and various social gatherings.

Take time to notice the numerous informative signs around, detailing the history of each structure.

Palatine Hill

Another remarkable historical site included in your ticket is Palatine Hill, located about 300 meters from the Colosseum and connected to the Roman Forum.

It was home to the Palace of Augustus and Tiberius, complete with summer gardens and fountains.

Palatine Hill is one of the oldest parts of Rome, nestled within the central region of the Seven Hills of Rome. Be prepared to walk a bit to explore and uncover its rich history.

Practical Information for Visiting the Colosseum

How to Get to the Colosseum

No matter where you are in Rome, getting to the Colosseum is relatively easy (they should really state, ‘all roads lead to the Colosseum’).

If you’re staying in the city center, you can most likely walk to the Colosseum within 30 minutes, depending on your hotel’s location. That’s how I made it from my stay to the site.

Alternatively, you can reach the Colosseum via the metro or public transport.

Taking the Metro to the Colosseum

The metro is the fastest way to get to the Colosseum. Just get off at the ‘Colosseo’ station, which is on Line B. While Rome is creating a new Line C that will open in 2025, currently Line B is your best option.

An additional option is to take the tram, Tram #3 goes to the Colosseum.

Colosseum Entrances

If you’re curious about the entrances to the Colosseum, you’ll find a couple. If you get off the metro at the Colosseo station, you’ll have to walk around to the other side of the structure.

Colosseum Tickets & Tours

Priority Ticket (Includes a Guided Tour)

The Colosseum no longer offers skip-the-line tickets, so the best option now is a priority ticket that comes with a guided tour.

This is an excellent choice for visitors as it allows you to secure your time slot while a guide informs you about the history and significance of the Colosseum during your stroll. It is also reasonably priced, typically just under $50.

Keep in mind, the Colosseum has a capacity of 3,000 visitors daily, so while that number may seem high, it’s best not to leave booking your ticket to chance and risk missing out.

Visiting the Colosseum with Limited Mobility or a Wheelchair

Is the Colosseum accessible for wheelchair users? In my view, it is one of the more accessibility-friendly sites I’ve visited.

After passing through security, there will be clear signage indicating the location of elevators for those in wheelchairs or needing mobility assistance.

Accessible restrooms and facilities for mothers with young children are also clearly indicated.

On the upper levels, there are specific paths and ramps designed for wheelchair users, ensuring that visitors can enjoy the views of the Colosseum without difficulties. However, certain areas may have limitations. Therefore, those in wheelchairs or with mobility issues can visit the Colosseum, though the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill present more of a challenge due to the significant walking distances between sites and a lack of dedicated pathways.

The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are located on the opposite side of the Colosseum and span a space roughly five times larger than the Colosseum itself!

Best Time to Visit the Colosseum

The Colosseum is perpetually busy. Although they limit visitor numbers to 3,000 at a time, it remains a bustling environment.

Some seasons are indeed better than others for a visit. I went during winter, which was slightly less crowded compared to Megan’s visits in other seasons. The ideal time to visit the Colosseum is from November to February, making it a great winter getaway from Naples or nearby areas.

The best time of day to visit the Colosseum is right at opening at 8:30 am when fewer visitors are around.

Limited Seating Options

Unfortunately, the Colosseum has very few places to sit and rest. It’s a relatively compact area, so expect to be on your feet for a majority of your visit.

Touching and Standing on Ancient Stones is Prohibited

There are regulations throughout the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill designed to preserve these ancient structures.

Please respect these rules. Pay attention to the signs indicating where you are permitted to touch, lean, or stand.

Stay within the designated boundaries and do not cross over ropes or barriers. It’s essential to be a responsible visitor at the Colosseum!

Water Fountains and Restrooms

There are several locations throughout the Colosseum where you can access water fountains and restrooms. The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill also have plenty of facilities available.

In addition, a water fountain is situated right next to the ‘Colosseo’ metro station, enabling you to fill up your water bottle on your way to the Colosseum.

Rome can get quite hot during the summer, so staying hydrated during your visit is crucial!

Cafes and Hotels with Colosseum Views

The Colosseum is centrally located in Rome, surrounded by many buildings that provide fantastic views of this UNESCO site.

Positioned in a bustling part of the city, you’ll have to descend some steps to reach it since it resembles a large crater in an urban environment. You’ll discover numerous cafes, souvenir shops, and restaurants offering views of the Colosseum!

Wear Comfortable Footwear

Before heading to the Colosseum, it’s crucial to wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be walking a lot, especially if you also plan to explore the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

Good footwear is vital!

The ground around this area is not always even, and you might come across rocky spots. Moreover, if it rains, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill can become muddy. It’s critical to have appropriate footwear!

I learned this the hard way by wearing old and uncomfortable winter boots from Norway that were not the best choice for exploring the Colosseum.

Protect Yourself from the Sun!

Rome can be sweltering during the summer, and even spring and autumn can bring hot sunny days. Be sure to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and perhaps an umbrella for shade, as you’ll spend considerable time outdoors.

Tips for Photographing the Colosseum

Be Prepared for Other Tourists in Your Photos

The Colosseum is one of the most photographed landmarks globally, so taking a picture without other visitors in the frame can be a challenge. However, it’s not impossible if you choose the right time and position.

You will likely find tourists moving through as they follow their tour guides while attempting to take selfies. Just keep moving until you find a perfect spot for your desired photo.

Don’t Bring a Drone

Flying drones is prohibited in numerous locations, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Colosseum, strictly enforce this ban! Avoid bringing one to prevent hefty fines and potential issues for others.

Instead, capture memories with your regular camera or GoPro. Explore unique angles for creative photos and videos you can share later!
