Planning to explore multiple islands? If you only have ONE day in Maui, here’s what you can do.
While we hope you can spend more than just a day discovering this stunning island, if you’re limited to only 24 hours, we’ve crafted the perfect itinerary for you!
Here are the top must-do activities in Maui for one day.
One-Day Itinerary
If you’re planning to stay overnight in Maui, we recommend the Kihei or Wailea areas. This part of the island is ideal due to its stunning beaches, excellent snorkeling spots, and a variety of restaurants, all bathed in sunshine. Additionally, South Maui is conveniently located near the highlights included in this itinerary.
For this itinerary, renting a car is essential. Luckily, we offer a variety of premium rental cars. Book with us, and your vehicle will be ready for you at the airport, eliminating the hassle of long waits or shuttle rides. We’ll ensure that your Maui vacation starts smoothly!
Let’s explore your one-day Maui itinerary.
7:00 AM
Start your day early! For breakfast, swing by Island Gourmet Market at The Shops at Wailea.
Here, you can sample island-style breakfast favorites like loco moco, kimchee fried rice, ube pancakes, or grab-and-go options such as spam musubi. There’s also a coffee bar to help kickstart your day, so order at the deli and get going.
Don’t forget to grab some snacks to sustain you throughout the day!
7:30 AM
Next, head to Ulua Beach, just down the road from The Shops, for some snorkeling. Ulua Beach is known for its beginner-friendly snorkeling and diverse marine life. You can stay in the shallows or venture further out, where you might spot turtles and colorful fish.
9:00 AM
After snorkeling, clean up (Ulua Beach has showers, restrooms, and changing areas) and then drive to La Perouse for some breathtaking views.
La Perouse is just a few miles beyond Makena State Park. You’ll be driving through scenic lava plains that showcase where molten lava flowed from Haleakala centuries ago.
The drive itself is stunning, winding along the coast while offering picturesque coves and incredible views of Haleakala.
Take your time to explore the area. Consider a short walk along the Hoapili Trail, which follows the rocky lava coastline for several miles.
10:30 AM
Next, drive just two miles to Makena State Park. This state park features the largest beach in Maui, which fittingly goes by the name Big Beach.
Although swimming isn’t ideal here due to strong shore breaks, it’s a must-see spot in South Maui. Relax on the sand or stroll along the beach.
Before you leave the state park, there’s one more beach you must visit. Head north towards Wailea and look for a yellow gate just after Big Beach’s first entrance.
Follow the short dirt road to Oneuli Beach – the only black sand beach in South Maui. Many visitors overlook this beach, without knowing you don’t have to drive to Hana to experience black sand.
12:00 PM
For a quick and delicious lunch, stop by 808 Deli in Rainbow Mall. This local favorite has received numerous accolades for its amazing sandwiches.
Other popular dining options in South Maui include Coconut’s Fish Cafe, Fred’s, and Nalu’s.
1:00 PM
It’s now time to visit one of Maui’s most breathtaking attractions: Iao Valley.
Located about a 30-minute drive from South Maui, Iao Valley State Monument offers lush walking trails, stunning mountain views, and insights into Hawaii’s rich history.
Reservations are required for out-of-state visitors but are generally easy to obtain, often even for same-day slots.
3:00 PM
Finally, it’s time to head to Maui’s north shore. Make your way to Ho’okipa Beach Park to witness the thrilling surf and windsurfing activities. In the winter, you can observe surfers tackling large waves, while in the summer, you’ll often see windsurfers gliding across the water with vibrant sails.
While Ho’okipa is not ideal for swimming, there is a lovely tidepool on the western edge of the beach where you can dip your feet or let kids play.
Next, head back to Paia, a historic plantation town filled with charm. Paia is a wonderful place to shop for local goods and souvenirs.
After a long day, treat yourself to a cocktail. Paia is a fantastic spot for happy hour; consider visiting Milagros or Cafe des Amis for delicious margaritas. For dinner, check out the original Paia Fish Market or Flatbread Pizza.
If you still have time, make your way to Paia Bay Beach to witness the sunset over the West Maui Mountains.
This itinerary is packed with activities, but it’s an unforgettable day. While we may have missed some of Maui’s incredible attractions like the Road to Hana and the Haleakala Crater, it gives you a wonderful reason to return!
We hope to see you on the island soon! A hui hou.
