A Fresh Journey to Experience Together

Date:

While we still have a lot to share about our ongoing journey across Canada, we wanted to take a moment to introduce something new – the Bruce Trail.

Long before we embarked on the Great Trail or the Camino Frances to Santiago, we hiked the renowned Bruce Trail in Ontario. Stretching 890 km, it follows the stunning Niagara Escarpment from Queenston Heights to Tobermory. This trail ignited our passion for long-distance hiking, where we completed our first thru-hike and gained invaluable lessons about backpacking. Our journey spanned from 2014 to 2022, taking nearly a decade to finish the Bruce Trail through a combination of day hikes, organized end-to-end events, and an educational thru-hike of the Peninsula Section.

When we first set foot on the Bruce Trail, we were completely inexperienced. We packed a 12-pound tent meant for four people, enough clothing for a week, and 12 days’ worth of food for three individuals. Remarkably, we overcame the challenges of our steep learning curve. If someone had told us that this adventure would mark the beginning of a lifelong hiking journey together, culminating in a 14,000 km trek from the Atlantic to the Pacific on the Trans Canada Trail, we would have never believed it.

During our hike, we had a variety of experiences. We participated in organized End-to-End events, enjoyed weekend walks with friends, and even hiked with a teenager. Throughout our journey, we encountered dozens of bird species, learned about newts and snakes, and delved into Ontario’s rich history – all of which can be explored along the Bruce Trail.
