A Unique Bookstore in Venice | Margie in Italy

Date:

Where else but Venice could you discover such a unique and whimsical bookstore? I had heard about this intriguing place, and last spring, I finally had the opportunity to visit Libreria Acqua Alta, located on Calle Lunga Santa Maria Formosa in the Castello district.

This extraordinary bookstore makes use of waterproof containers, wheelbarrows, kitchen sinks, buckets, and even bathtubs to store and display its collection of books.

In addition to Italian literature, you can find books in English and other languages, all stored in a haphazard manner — stacked precariously almost to the ceiling on various shelves. This bookstore is truly a treasure trove for bibliophiles. One room even features books arranged inside a full-sized gondola.

You’re likely to find at least one intriguing book to take home, as this bookstore offers a mixture of both new and used books across various genres.

The quirky name “Libreria Acqua Alta” translates to “High Water Bookstore.” During the acqua alta, or high tide, when Venice’s streets flood, the bookstore remarkably keeps most of its collection safe. The shop is affectionately known as a floating bookstore, consisting of several rooms packed with books, maps, magazines, costumes, and many other fascinating items.

It seems the secret is out about this hidden gem, as the bookstore was surprisingly crowded during my visit. If you’re a cat lover, keep your eyes peeled for some furry companions lounging on the bookshelves. I noticed two cats roaming around, but I’ve heard there are more who claim this bookstore as their home.

At the back of the shop, you’ll find a door that leads outside. Here, stacked books that have been damaged by water are cleverly arranged to form makeshift steps, allowing you to climb up and gaze over a wall at the canal. It’s an experience unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

A particularly noteworthy feature of this shop is its distinctive fire escape, which opens directly into the canal.

Away from the bustling St. Mark’s Square, this distinctive shop is a must-visit in Venice. Often regarded as the most beautiful bookstore in the world, it may very well be the most eccentric as well.

Why not add this extraordinary bookstore to your must-see list on your next trip to Venice?
