Are you ready to explore the great outdoors by yourself? You’re not alone! The number of solo campers increased by 28% between 2021 and 2022, as reported by a recent study.

The Dyrt, a leading camping app, has discovered a rising trend in solo camping.

“It’s the perfect moment to reconnect with nature and yourself, and possibly even make new friends,” says Rachel P., a camper from Georgia. “I can’t express how serene it is to sit and listen to the sounds of the forest. It’s truly unique.”

The report reveals that avid campers—those who camped 11 or more times in 2022—were 36.1% more likely to engage in solo camping. Furthermore, avid campers were twice as likely to have worked from a campsite or camped during the winter months. Interestingly, campers who identified as LGBTQ+ were 51% more likely to have camped alone at least once in 2022.

“I believe having solo experiences is essential, though not all the time. As a woman, it’s important to take safety precautions,” advises Alice J., a camper from Colorado. “Inform someone about your plans and check in with them. Ensure you have all necessary supplies, tools, and safety equipment, and that you know how to use them. I recommend a test run nearby. Check your tires, and bring activities (like hobbies, books, or crafts) to keep yourself occupied in case of inclement weather.”

Camping alone can indeed be intimidating for beginners. However, The Dyrt PRO members can embrace their solo adventures with confidence, thanks to advanced PRO Maps features that include cell service availability, free camping spots, dump stations, water stations, overnight parking, and more.

“This year, I noticed an influx of solo campers, particularly women,” says Annette Sallee, owner of Netties Mountain View Retreat in Buckley, Washington. “During the pandemic, people went camping to spend time with friends and family. Now, as the pressures of work and daily life return, I think many are seeking some quiet time to disconnect.”

The Dyrt is a comprehensive camping resource, boasting over 8 million user-generated reviews, photos, and tips for every RV site, cabin, glamping, and tent camping location, encompassing all public, private, and free camping areas across the United States.
