No need to worry; getting there is easy!
I flew into Trapani (but Palermo works well too, if you prefer), and spent a night in this delightful city.
Egadi Islands Closest Major Cities and Airports
Palermo: The capital of Sicily, Palermo Falcone-Borsellino Airport (PMO) is well-connected with international flights.
Trapani: A smaller city with a closer proximity to the islands, Vincenzo Florio Airport Trapani-Birgi (TPS) mainly serves domestic and some international routes.
Aegadian Islands Ferries
Island-hopping is incredibly easy!
You can reach Favignana and Levanzo with just a half-hour hydrofoil ride from Trapani.
No matter which island you choose to visit—Favignana, Levanzo, or Marettimo—you’ll find plenty of transport options available.
Two main companies, Liberty Lines and Ustica Ferries, operate the ferries and speedy hydrofoils that will whisk you away in no time.
While many travelers opt for quick day trips, I suggest taking a few days to fully immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of each island.
Pro tip from a seasoned traveler: Be sure to book your ferry tickets in advance, especially during the summer months. It’s just like trying to get Taylor Swift concert tickets!
I personally used Liberty Lines—their app is incredibly user-friendly. You can keep your tickets on your phone, eliminating the need for paper tickets.
Best Time to Visit the Aegadian Islands
The best time to visit the Egadi Islands is between April and September, as the weather is warm and perfect for outdoor activities.
July and August are peak tourist months, so consider planning your trip during the shoulder seasons (April-June and September) for a more relaxed experience.

Favignana
I began my adventure on Favignana, the largest of the Egadi Islands located just off the western coast of Sicily.
This island is captivating, evoking a distinct “la dolce vita” vibe that is hard to find elsewhere in the world.
Even though it’s the most popular among tourists, this simply means there are more locals to interact with and a lively atmosphere, which I personally enjoyed!
I spent three days exploring the island—guess what I did?
I biked to virtually every beach!
Seriously, biking is the favored mode of transport since the terrain is quite flat. If pedaling isn’t your thing, you can opt for a scooter instead.

Now, let me rave about the beaches for a moment.
They’re absolutely stunning!
The sea? It’s a breathtaking shade of blue that looks straight out of a postcard.
I found myself blinking in disbelief, thinking, “Is this even real?”
Heads up: Most of the beaches are rocky rather than sandy.
If you’re like me and enjoy feeling sand between your toes, be sure to pack water shoes!
I learned this the hard way—ouch!

I spent a night there and am already making plans to return!
This island is perfect for those who love to stroll around. You can easily walk the entire island as it is quite small.
Despite its size, Levanzo boasts impressive natural and historical attractions.
The coves? Simply divine!
They’re not only breathtaking but also easily accessible—no mountain-climbing skills are required!
You can take organized boat tours from Favignana or nearby towns like Trapani and Marsala to discover this paradise.

In the center of Levanzo, you’ll find a quaint village filled with charming shops and the lovely church of Maria Santissima di Trapani.
The standout attraction is the stunning beach of Cala Fredda.
Imagine crystal-clear waters, golden sand, and dramatic limestone cliffs as your backdrop. Additionally, you can explore the underground caves that dot the area.
If you’re feeling adventurous, hike up to Pizzo del Monaco, the island’s highest point at 270 meters above sea level.
Levanzo is also home to the Grotta del Genovese, a remarkable cave showcasing some of the finest prehistoric rock art you’ll ever encounter.
These ancient carvings depict animals, ceremonial masks, and human figures spanning 8,000 years—simply breathtaking!
Can you believe that no tools or equipment were ever discovered in this cave? Experts suspect it served as a worship place for early humans.
Plan to dedicate at least a full day to fully appreciate the charm of Levanzo.
This way, you can wander, explore, and also relax on one of its beautiful beaches.
You’ll want to soak up every serene moment in this slice of paradise!
Despite its small size, the town is well-equipped with three restaurants (the seafood is incredible!), two bars for your evening aperitivo, and a bakery that fills the air with the delightful aroma of fresh bread every morning.
What truly captivated me about Levanzo was its tranquil sea.
The water is so clear; you can easily see your toes even when fully submerged.
And the serenity? There’s no crowd or rush—just the soothing rhythm of the sea and, perhaps, a gelato in hand.

However, Levanzo isn’t the only must-visit island in the Aegadian group.
There’s also Marettimo, which stands out for its wild and unspoiled natural beauty!
The island is characterized by steep slopes and dense Mediterranean vegetation, offering an experience that feels like stepping back in time.
With minimal human influence, the island’s natural beauty has thrived undisturbed.
Here’s a fun fact: cars are completely prohibited on Marettimo, enhancing your sense of isolation from modern life.
You can hop in a sea taxi to reach the more secluded coves in no time.
It feels like you have your own private boatman assisting you!
Marettimo is a dream for every nature lover and an adventure seeker.
There are multiple ways to access its picturesque hidden beaches.
If hiking isn’t your strong suit, don’t worry—there are plenty of peaks that can be easily reached by boat, allowing you to discover your own little oasis without breaking a sweat.
In addition to its spectacular landscapes, Marettimo is home to remarkable Roman ruins.
Originally military structures, these impressive remains are now popular attractions thanks to their stunning views.
Two days is the perfect amount of time to experience the untamed beauty of Marettimo.
But be warned: once you soak in the magic of these islands, you might never want to leave!

Now, here’s a pro tip: bring along some rubber water shoes. Why? Because the seabed can be a bit tricky with lurking sea urchins.
Trust me, you don’t want to step on those! Water shoes will protect your feet.
If you enjoy trekking (and the islands are perfect for that!), be sure to pack a sturdy pair of sneakers and some clothes you don’t mind getting dusty; it’s definitely worth it for the views!
One last thing—bring a flashlight. It may seem random, but there are fantastic caves to explore, and a flashlight will prove very useful!
