Fort Foster (Kittery): Fort Foster is a unique beach experience that we truly enjoy. In addition to three small beaches, this town park is home to historic forts, which were active from 1901 to 1946. The park also features a playground, a covered pavilion ideal for picnics, and extensive walking trails. One of our favorite spots is the long wooden pier, along with the 2.1-mile gravel walking trail that encircles Fort Foster. Dogs are welcome, and the park is open daily from 10 AM until dusk; the daily admission fee is $25 per vehicle.
Mount Agamenticus (York): Locals affectionately call it Mt. A (pronounced aga-men-ti-cus), and it offers some of the finest views in southern Maine! As the tallest peak in the area at 692 feet, you can either hike or drive to the summit to take in the breathtaking panoramic vistas. The site includes a Summit Learning Lodge and a range of well-marked hiking trails suitable for all skill levels. Our favorite trail is the Ring Trail to Summit Loop, which features numerous lookout points to enjoy the scenery. Mt. A is nestled within 10,000 acres of preserved land and is open throughout the year from dawn to dusk (6 AM to 7 PM during the summer). Parking is $2 per hour, payable online via Pango or with cash for the on-site “Iron Rangers.”
Vaughan Woods Memorial State Park (South Berwick): Experience tranquility in this beautiful Maine state park bordering the Salmon Falls River and New Hampshire. The Bridle Path combined with the River Run trail creates a scenic loop, and you can adjust your walk’s length with various cut-through options. Located near the historic Hamilton House, this park offers a playground, picnic tables, a grill area for group outings, and an outhouse. Discover your peace here! The park is open daily from 9 AM until sunset during the summer months. A non-resident admission fee of $4 per person applies; cash or check only.
