In Rochester, during the spring and fall seasons, the Watson Sports field in the Northwest part of town buzzes with activity on Saturday mornings and afternoons. Families, all clad in colorful soccer t-shirts, fill the area with their energy.
Here, teams from diverse neighborhoods come together to compete. Each hour, as one set of games concludes, new teams take the field. The vibrant colors, the excitement from players and families alike, and even the snack truck create an inviting atmosphere that makes you want to watch the games unfold.
This past spring was marked by unexpected rain, causing some matches to be played in between downpours. Watching parents with umbrellas and seeing players with wet hair during games felt reminiscent of European league matches.
Soccer: A Family Endeavor
Practices and games organized by Minnesota Rush unite families in a collective purpose. Parents, children, and sometimes siblings become part of this shared journey.
Parents fulfill their role by transporting their children to practices, keeping an eye on their progress, and staying engaged with coaches’ recommendations. Meanwhile, the young players are dedicated, practicing hard, and striving to execute their coach’s guidance effectively. Rochester is home to many talented and ambitious young athletes determined to achieve their sports dreams.
Parents provide their support by ensuring their children’s training resources are available, arranging transportation, and, most importantly, offering encouragement. In turn, young players are eager, practicing hard, paying attention to their coaches, and striving to excel. The commitment present among these children reflects their potential as future stars in sports.
Upon closer examination, this family-centered involvement showcases admirable qualities that enhance the joy of practices and especially Saturday games.
The presence of different generations at the games, including grandparents and extended family members, highlights the vibrant life surrounding the sport. Even grandparents, who may have mobility challenges, bring their chairs to support their grandchildren. This sense of connection across generations, filled with shared excitement and emotions, enriches the family experience.
Among the cheers of parents, coaches, and players, siblings’ joyful presence is a common sight. Younger siblings add to the fun, running around the Watson Field on rainy days, playing in the mud, and congregating by the snack stands—creating a lively backdrop to the bustling atmosphere.
Teamwork and Life Skills
One of the most rewarding aspects of soccer practices is the fostering of teamwork among young players. The importance of collaborating and passing the ball is evident in matches and how children interact with one another.
One especially heartwarming moment is when young players execute impressive passes and celebrate together after scoring, each in their unique way. Such teamwork often becomes a topic of conversation for parents and children throughout the week, strengthening their bond and creating more shared experiences.
The soccer field also cultivates empathy among players, especially when someone falls or gets hurt. They comfort and encourage each other, reinforcing a sense of responsibility within the team.
Furthermore, young soccer players show noticeable improvements in concentration and quick decision-making abilities each season. Many demonstrate an increased focus, allowing them to identify opportunities and make decisive plays for passing, defending, or scoring. This heightened awareness leads to more engaging and strategic games.
For those actively involved with Minnesota Rush soccer, the ability to make quick decisions and maintain focus has sharpened significantly, allowing them not only to capitalize on their own chances but also to call out opportunities to their teammates. Regardless of Saturday’s game results, young players showcase thrilling teamwork, demonstrating clear understanding of defensive and offensive strategies and, most importantly, the necessity of continued passing amongst teammates. These moments create captivating matches that draw their parents into daydreams of their children participating in the World Cup.

The excitement and experiences enjoyed by families and players participating in these training sessions and competitions are a testament to the Minnesota Rush organization. This group has successfully fostered such opportunities for our lovely city of Rochester and its surrounding areas. The team at Rush works diligently to offer the best services to Rochester’s community.
Rush’s efforts to secure financial assistance from various sponsors to help keep costs manageable are highly valued by parents, and the dedication of all volunteers at these events is commendable, enhancing support for the youth players in our city.
Ultimately, our children will reflect on these moments and cherish them as some of the best days of their lives.
I am Leila Rakhshan. I married my husband Fred a decade ago and made the move to America. After years of working in public relations for various charitable and private organizations, freelancing as a multimedia writer, and teaching at the university level, I chose to focus on being a mother and nurturing our children. I dedicated time to reading, embracing moments of my children’s growth, and engaging in their early experiences.
Now that both my daughter and son are in elementary school, I’m excited to write again, sharing my journey just as I did in years past, while continuing to learn and grow through their experiences.
