On a typical day in Iceland, the weather can be completely unpredictable!
Generally, the climate is windy, with cold winters and cool summers.
You may have heard the saying, “death and taxes are life’s only certainties.”
In Iceland, you can count on breathtaking landscapes and, of course, wind! 😀
The wind is nearly always blowing, and when it rains, you often get what I call ‘sideways rain.’ This can be quite chilly, emphasizing the need for the best rain gear in Iceland!
The western and southern parts of the country typically experience more rain and milder temperatures, while the eastern and northern regions tend to get heavier snowfall and cooler conditions year-round.
Keep in mind that the weather can vary significantly depending on where you are or if you’re moving from coastal areas inland.

When choosing your outerwear, the most important factor to consider is its waterproof rating.
Don’t overlook the seams – they are often weak points.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ventured out with just a headband only to get caught in a downpour!
A hood is crucial for keeping you warmer and more protected from rain.
There are two main types of jackets for Iceland: rain jackets and water-resistant jackets. Let’s explore the difference and why having both might be beneficial.
The Rain Jacket
For the best rain jackets in Iceland, I recommend two options: a waterproof rain jacket and a water-resistant jacket.
The fabric of a waterproof rain jacket may feel somewhat plastic, but it is engineered so that water beads up and rolls off effortlessly.
When recommending rain gear, I’m talking about items that repel water entirely. You’ll often see a water resistance rating on the label, measured in millimeters.
I would opt for something like the Marmot rain jacket when exploring behind waterfalls or during heavier downpours (not just during light drizzles).
When visiting places like Seljalandsfoss or getting close to Skógafoss, wearing a 100% waterproof rain jacket is essential!
Pro Tip: During the winter months, consider a fleece-lined rain jacket for added warmth.
Water-Resistant Jacket
Water-resistant jackets are generally a bit porous.
While they may absorb some moisture, they will keep you mostly dry. I find them great for misty rain days.
They are also ideal for casual outings like sightseeing or hiking, where a lightweight design is advantageous.

Waterproof Pants for Iceland
In line with the water-resistant jacket I mentioned earlier, I typically opt for stretchy hiking pants. They’re my go-to option for exploring, hiking, or just spending time outdoors.
These aren’t completely waterproof, but they can handle a fair amount of moisture.
Again, remember to check for waterproof seams. These pants don’t come with additional lining for warmth, making them more suitable for spring, summer, or autumn.
Waterproof rain pants are a wise choice for winter visits to Iceland. However, you may not want to wear them all day!
Wearing rain gear all day can make you feel overly warm. To stay cool, opt for breathable hiking pants.
When it comes to footwear, hiking boots are the best choice.
They are versatile and provide excellent support for long walks, whether you’re hiking to Reykjadalur Hot Springs or Hengifoss waterfall.
Hiking boots: These are nearly 100% waterproof, though they might not hold up if you step into a flowing stream.
For general sightseeing (especially when combined with proper rain gear), they are perfect.
Hiking shoes: If you prefer something lighter, hiking shoes can also be a good option. They look like boots but offer less ankle support.
While they’re generally waterproof, they might not perform as well in very wet conditions compared to boots.
For both hiking boots and shoes, ensure they have a good grip on the outsole to prevent slipping on wet or rocky terrain.
I recommend avoiding rain boots due to their lack of support and grip, which isn’t ideal for Iceland’s rugged landscapes!
