Eustis, Florida is a lively town with a population of around 20,700, located about 38 miles northwest of Orlando.
Together with Tavares and Mount Dora, Eustis forms a corner of what is commonly referred to as Florida’s “Golden Triangle.”

A Brief History of Eustis, Florida
Eustis, originally known as Highlands and later Pendryville, is located on the eastern shore of Lake Eustis. The town was named after the lake, which was named in 1825 after General Abraham Eustis, a notable figure in the Seminole Wars.

Prior to the arrival of the railroad in the 1880s, Eustis thrived as a port for steamers navigating the Harris, Eustis, Dora, and Griffin lakes.
This network of lakes connected to the world through the Oklawaha River, leading to the St. Johns River and ultimately to the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1883, the town simplified its name to just Eustis.
Citrus farming became a significant industry in the region, though devastating freezes in 1894 and 1895 nearly wiped out the crops.
Over the years, citrus trees returned to prominence, but additional freezes in 1983 and 1984 once again severely affected the citrus economy in this area.
Eustis Historical Museum
Guilford David Clifford was an early pioneer whose residence at the corner of Bay Street and Bates Avenue now houses the Eustis Historical Museum and Preservation Society.
Fountain Inn in Eustis, Florida
In the 1920s, Frank Waterman, a fountain pen manufacturer from New York, built the Fountain Inn in Eustis.
The Fountain Inn later became a local hospital, which was demolished in recent years and is considered the direct predecessor to the modern Advent Hospital Waterman in nearby Tavares.
He also built his residence, known as Blue Lake Lodge, located on East Orange Avenue, where Blue Lakes Estates now stands.

Another regular event is Eustis Live, held on the first Friday of each month. This lively gathering features street vendors, live music, and a festive community atmosphere.
The city’s prime location on Lake Eustis makes it a favorite destination for sailing enthusiasts.
Eustis is home to the Lake Eustis Sailing Club, which hosts four one-design racing fleets and offers ample boat storage facilities alongside a large clubhouse for social and racing events.
The highlight of the year is Georgefest, one of the oldest festivals in the United States, celebrating the birthday of George Washington.
This festival is reputedly the longest-running event of its kind in the state of Florida.
The Georgefest celebrated its 120th consecutive event in February 2022.

Captain Jim “Malibu” Reynolds
A section of SR-44 on the east side of Eustis connects US-441 to SR-44.
This route runs between Lake Joanna and Loch Leven, passing by the Brookshire, Park Place, and Loch Leven developments.
This stretch of road is named Captain Jim “Malibu” Reynolds Jr. Road.
Captain Reynolds was the son of James H. Reynolds, Sr. of Eustis. Tragically, he lost his life when his F-16 fighter jet crashed during a training mission at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.
