Whitewater Rafting on the Nahatlatch River

Knowing the Nahatlatch River’s reputation, I opted for a less intense experience on our first run and positioned myself at the back of the raft.

However, ‘easy’ is subjective on this glacier-fed river. The waves crashed against our boat, whisking us into whirlpools and past massive boulders, while enormous standing waves greeted us.

By the end, icy water splashed over our heads repeatedly, leaving little time to catch our breath.

We navigated through over a dozen exhilarating class 3 and 4 rapids over the course of 7 kilometers, with playful names like ‘Twisted Sister,’ ‘Pinball,’ and bluntly, ‘A-Hole.’

Amid the rushing water, I noticed areas where wildfire had scorched the trees along the riverbank, but the waves and whirlpools quickly commanded my attention.

The high water levels during our visit enabled us to tackle class 4+ rapids, encouraging us to return to our starting point for another run. This time, I joined JR at the front of the raft and braced myself for the adventure.

The second run was undeniably the highlight. Our guide, Bryan, who is also the owner of REO, recognized our group’s capabilities and chose a more challenging route along the river.

We faced even larger waves, skimming past smooth rocks. We collided with cliff walls, spun around boulders, and ducked under tree branches.

Our turns became sharper, our raft spun more frequently, and I ended up soaking wet.

Front-row seating to the waves delivered a much more intense experience, leading me to paddle through thin air more often than water. I found myself bouncing out of my seat several times and landing back in the middle of the raft.

Throughout the adventure, our group laughed, cheered, and reveled in every moment.

About REO Rafting

Founded in 1983 by Bryan Fogelman, REO Rafting remains a family-owned and operated business.

With over 50 years of rafting experience, Bryan has made first descents on numerous BC rivers, including the Stein, Similkameen Canyon, Elaho, and of course, the Nahatlatch River.

As mentioned earlier, REO is the sole rafting company on the Nahatlatch River, where you’ll find 24 rapids classified from 3 to 4+.

Having rafted in both Canada and the USA multiple times, JR and I can confidently say that the Nahatlatch River has provided us with our favorite rafting experience to date.

In addition to the Nahatlatch River, REO also offers rafting adventures on other nearby rivers, including the Fraser, Coquihalla, Thompson, and Nicola, depending on seasonal conditions.

The prime time for whitewater rafting on the Nahatlatch River is when the water levels are high, generally from June to late July. This can vary from year to year, so it’s advisable to reach out to REO for the latest updates.

What to Expect

REO operates rafting tours twice daily, with morning and afternoon departures. Each trip lasts around 4 hours, with roughly 2.5 hours spent on the water. A short bus ride takes you to the start of the river run.

Day trip rafters enjoy access to most resort facilities, including the hot tub, relaxation areas, and a private beach. Make the most of your visit by spending additional time at the resort or consider an overnight stay.

Here are a few key points to know about rafting with REO:

  • No prior experience is necessary; the rafting experience is designed for beginners as well as experienced paddlers. The guides provide clear and enjoyable instruction.
  • All necessary equipment is provided, so you only need to bring a swimsuit. Each participant wears a wetsuit over the swimsuit, along with booties, a helmet, and a PFD.
  • Rafts accommodate 6-8 people plus a guide.
  • Photos are taken during the trip and offered for purchase afterward. We also used our own GoPro with a harness.
  • Lunch is included and served on the resort’s covered patio overlooking the Nahatlatch River. Be sure to notify REO in advance regarding any dietary restrictions; vegan and gluten-free options are available.
  • During our trip, we were also provided with drinks and snacks (fruit, granola bars, cookies) between river runs.

Safety First

REO boasts an outstanding safety record. Having rafted numerous times across North America, I can confidently say that REO Rafting is among the most safety-conscious companies I’ve encountered.

Before we even stepped into the raft, we were encouraged to dip into the icy river to acclimatize ourselves to the cold.

Since we were rafting on a scorching 39°C July day, this cold plunge was refreshing and vital for safety.

Once on board, before we encountered any rapids, we practiced paddle strokes, rescues, and communication techniques. Additionally, a safety kayaker followed our three-raft convoy to handle any emergencies (they proved to be unnecessary but had a blast riding the waves).

The 10-acre resort spans three levels, set along the edge of the beautiful jade-green Nahatlatch River. The soothing sound of the flowing river constantly enhances the experience.

A towering forest canopy offers refreshing shade, with majestic mountains gracing the background, showcasing classic British Columbia scenery.

Bryan purchased the land from a local homesteader and built luxurious glamping tents along the river in 1989, long before “glamping” even became a popular term!

Recently, the off-grid resort has faced its share of challenges. In 2021, it endured extreme heat during the June heat dome followed by abnormal rainfall in November that caused mudslides and floods, severely damaging nearby Highway 1.

In August 2023, a devastating wildfire swept through the property. Thanks to an ambitious and successful rebuilding effort, the result of the damage is only visible in a few areas.

Upper-level relaxation area

A significant transformation has been seen in the resort’s upper level. Once shaded by trees, the area is now bathed in sunlight, featuring a lovely relaxation spot with shaded hammocks and a blooming garden.

The beautiful sandy beach created by the flooding river in 2021 has become a cherished spot for both guests and staff. This serves as a reminder that sometimes adversity leads to unexpected blessings.

Accommodation Options

REO Resort offers 17 glamping tents, all located within just 5 meters from the river. Each tent features a private patio with comfortable seating.

Inside, the tents are beautifully appointed with wooden-framed king-size beds, cozy blankets, and lanterns.

Similar to REO’s rafting trips, minimal packing is required. Unlike some glamping resorts, everything is provided, so guests need only bring clothing and personal items*.

Wi-Fi is accessible in most tents; however, electricity is limited to certain areas on the property.

*Guests are welcome to bring alcohol; a cooler is advisable.

Curious about the restrooms? Flush toilets are located just a short walk from each tent. Having visited numerous campgrounds and glamping spots, I can confidently say that these facilities are the cleanest I’ve encountered.

A new shower building is currently under construction close to the tents, but for now, there are three indoor shower rooms located near the mid-level outdoor dining area. Each shower is private, features excellent water pressure, and remains impeccably clean.

The décor reflected our tent’s name: Grizzly Falls.

The outdoor showers on the upper level, situated near the hammock garden, are a must-try. These showers, open to the sky, give you an unparalleled connection to nature while watering the nearby garden plants as an added bonus.

REO Rafting Resort is also an excellent choice for travelers with dietary needs, such as gluten-free and vegan options. I personally follow a meat-free diet and felt extremely well catered to.

The menu is focused on whole foods and is designed for easy substitutions and additions; I typically chose the vegan or vegetarian meal with fish as an addition. Desserts and cakes were consistently vegan.

The road distance outside the highway totals about 18km, with 10km being unpaved. The road conditions for this portion are excellent and well-maintained.

Taking a refreshing dip in the Nahatlatch River

From downtown Vancouver, the approximately 235km drive takes around 3 hours. From cities such as Abbotsford, Langley, and others in the Lower Mainland, the drive takes 2-2.5 hours.
