Date:

Why choose a cruise with 565 guests when you can embark on an intimate Arctic adventure in Norway? Join the Nansen Polar Expedition for a unique small-group cruise that begins in Tromsø and explores breathtaking locations like Lofoten, Senja, Troms, the Lyngen Alps, and Alta.

The Small Arctic Cruise in Norway with MS Villa Nansen Polar Expedition

The small Arctic cruise I’m referring to is the Adventure Cruise with the Nansen Polar Expedition. This exclusive journey caters to just 12 fortunate guests, allowing for an intimate experience as you traverse the stunning Northern Norway region above the Arctic Circle. With only a handful of guests aboard, you’ll have ample space and swift access to Zodiacs, often taking just 10-15 minutes to reach the whales once on the water.

I used to work at Up Norway, one of the premier travel companies in Norway known for crafting bespoke journeys. I was fortunate to be invited on this remarkable voyage to uncover the marvels of Norway’s small Arctic cruise.

Day 1: Embarkation for the Small Arctic Cruise

Upon arriving in Tromsø, often referred to as the Arctic Capital of Norway, you’ll embark the MS Villa and meet the dedicated expedition team. If you have time before boarding, consider visiting the Polar Museum to deepen your understanding of Norway’s polar history, or enjoy a coffee at Kaffebønna, a charming café ideal for exploring Tromsø.

Days 2 to 4: Expedition Mode on the Small Arctic Cruise

Each morning, the expedition team briefs you on the day’s itinerary, which typically includes whale watching, launching the Zodiacs to explore nature, and perhaps having extraordinary close encounters with whales. We frequently spotted whales and were in the Zodiac in under 15 minutes.

Lofoten Islands & Trollfjorden

Depending on your sailing schedule, you may wake up to the majestic sights of the Lofoten Islands; experiencing them in winter is even more enchanting than in summer. The mountains, blanketed in snow, create a more dramatic landscape. The unique light and crisp air is inviting, adding to the serene energy of this beautiful area. For more information, you can read my blog post: Lofoten in April.

Senja

Senja, the second-largest island in Norway after Svalbard, is an awe-inspiring destination surrounded by fjords, snow-capped peaks, and pristine Arctic waters. It’s a haven for wildlife, including white-tailed eagles and seals, and offers ideal conditions for viewing the Northern Lights due to its lack of light pollution. If you’re lucky, you might witness the Northern Lights every night of the cruise, as I did. There’s even the exhilarating option of trying an Arctic plunge in freezing waters—when was the last time you swam in water at -0.7 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit)?

Troms & Lyngen Alps

One of the standout highlights of the small Arctic cruise was sailing through the stunning Lyngen Alps, known for their breathtaking mountain peaks. In this area, you’re near Skjervøy, where orcas and humpback whales often gather in winter. At one point, a photographer was so close to the whales that he had to momentarily put down his camera to fully enjoy the sight. Observing whales in their natural habitat is a truly transformative experience and a testament to the wonders of nature.

The Aurora Distillery

This northernmost distillery allows guests to connect with local ingredients and culture, creating award-winning whiskey using pure meltwater. The tasting experience is particularly enjoyable.

Day 5: Disembarkation in Alta

Sadly, all journeys must come to an end, but that doesn’t mean your adventures must stop. After breakfast, we visited the remarkable Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel in Alta and embarked on an exhilarating snowmobile adventure, taking in the breathtaking landscapes of Alta and Finnmark, including the awe-inspiring Alta Canyon—a landmark notable for its vastness and its reputation as one of the best salmon rivers in the world. You can enjoy lunch at either Jotka Mountain Lodge or Sorrisniva Lavvu restaurant and even choose to spend the night at the Igloo Hotel or one of the lodge rooms at Sorrisniva.

Experiencing Life Onboard the Small Arctic Cruise

Aboard the MS Villa, you are immersed in nature. Spending four nights on this vessel is a true retreat, allowing you to indulge in the simple pleasure of being. It’s completely acceptable to sit close to the captain and watch villages and fjords float by, soaking it all in. Occasionally, the captain might even borrow your chair! With only 12 guests onboard, comfortable cabins, exceptional cuisine, and jaw-dropping scenery—all wrapped in the possibility of witnessing Northern Lights and whales—this small Arctic cruise in Norway is nothing short of extraordinary.

What to Pack for Your Small Arctic Cruise in Norway

Warm winter clothing and layers are a must. Pack several jackets to keep warm; I used wool t-shirts, a fleece jacket, a down jacket, and my parka to stay cozy during the Zodiac excursions. Overall, the atmosphere onboard is relaxed, so you’re welcome to roam around in slippers and casual attire.
