Predappio, in its current form, did not exist prior to the 1930s. It was a small village known as Dovia, situated atop a strong rock where the Ordelaffi family constructed a fortress, one of several that can be found throughout the Apennines in the Pianura Padana region. ~ Predappio, the rationalist town. A place worth visiting.
Predappio, often referred to as the town of the Duce, is located in the province of Forlì-Cesena in Romagna, which is the western part of Emilia Romagna. It is notable for being the birthplace and final resting place of the Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. Although the village has a population of just over 6,400, it is becoming increasingly popular with tourists following the Mussolini pilgrimage route, as Fascism seems to be regaining some of its former allure.
You can explore Mussolini’s birthplace, which has been turned into a museum featuring rotating exhibits. However, the space has been largely stripped, so there isn’t much to see.
Located just uphill from the old market, the house offers an engaging video presentation, though it is available only in Italian.
From the birthplace, you can stroll down the main street towards Palazzo Varano, Mussolini’s second residence. Along the way, you will encounter shops selling Fascist memorabilia and the Fascist Headquarters, which stands as an excellent example of Rationalist architecture. Note, however, that it is currently closed, and there are no plans for restoration or demolition. Fascism remains in a state of limbo.
As you continue past Palazzo Varano and the prominent church of Sant’Antonio, preferably by car, you will find a gated cemetery on your right. There are no signs indicating it, but the Mussolini crypt is located in a corner. A few stairs lead you down to this:
During the off-season, when tourist numbers are low, you’ll find people searching for the tomb. It’s quite an adventurous journey, almost like being trapped in a maze surrounded by small buildings of death. There is also a restroom available in case your search takes longer than expected.
Don’t forget to stop by the church within the cemetery, where Mussolini’s labeled Baptismal Font is awkwardly placed among other discarded items.
Fascist Limbo: History is not easy to discard, yet it has often been wanted for removal until now.
