Join the Amateur Traveler as we discuss traveling to the Laikipia region of Kenya with Shaun Stanley from Stanley Safaris, who shares insights about this remarkable African destination.
Why should you consider visiting the Laikipia region?
Shaun explains, “Kenya is one of Africa’s most renowned safari destinations. It is where safaris first began. However, this popularity comes with challenges, such as overcrowding in certain locations like the Maasai Mara, which is facing issues with excessive vehicle presence at wildlife sightings. We aim to guide our guests away from these crowded spots to provide a more authentic African experience.”
“Laikipia is unique because it is situated in the northern part of the country, away from the tourist trails. It consists of several privately owned farms that were once cattle ranches. The owners have shifted towards a conservation model, transforming parts of their land into protected areas where they are reintroducing different species of wildlife. In fact, Laikipia is one of the best places in Africa to see both black and white rhinos, which are critically endangered.”
In the podcast, Shaun Stanley suggests the following itinerary for exploring the Laikipia region of Kenya:
- Arrival in Nairobi:
- Spend a night in Nairobi to rest and adjust to the local environment, allowing you to recover after navigating the bustling airport upon arrival.
- Travel to Laikipia:
- Take a light aircraft from Nairobi to Laikipia, landing on small bush airstrips where animals may need to be cleared before your arrival.
- Stay at Ol Lentille (3 nights):
- Cultural Experience: Owned by the Maasai and Samburu communities, Ol Lentille offers guests a genuine cultural experience, including visits to local villages and meaningful cultural exchange.
- Activities: Enjoy walking safaris, scenic hikes, bush breakfasts, and sunset drinks on breathtaking cliffs overlooking the valley. While some wildlife is present, the main focus is on cultural immersion.
- Accommodation: Guests stay in private villas, ranging from one to four bedrooms, each providing a personal guide and vehicle for a tailored safari experience.
- Travel to Lewa (3 nights):
- Wildlife Safari: Accommodate at Sirikoi or Lewa Wilderness Camp, both situated within Lewa Conservancy, a premier wildlife destination in Kenya, particularly for spotting black and white rhinos, elephants, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, buffalo, and more.
- Activities: Engage in wildlife viewing, rhino tracking with rangers, walking safaris, horseback safaris, and night drives. Each booking at Sirikoi includes a private vehicle and guide, customizing your safari experience.
- Helicopter Safari (Optional): Embark on a helicopter ride to discover the remote northern regions of Kenya, exploring sand dunes, rivers, or Mount Kenya, with opportunities for exciting activities like fly fishing in alpine lakes.
- End of the Trip:
- After your stay in Laikipia, guests may return to Nairobi or continue their adventure to other safari locations, such as the Maasai Mara, especially during the migration season for more traditional wildlife experiences.
This thoughtfully designed itinerary beautifully blends cultural experiences with wildlife safaris, filled with personalized and exclusive activities.

Hi Chris,
I love your podcast and have been a listener for many years. I often revisit episodes while planning my trips, and your guests’ insights are invaluable. Thank you!
As a wheelchair user living in the UK, finding accessible vacation options is relatively simple in developed countries like those in Europe and the US. However, it’s much more challenging in unique destinations.
I’m sure I’m not alone in expressing that a bonus episode discussing resources for accessibility in travel, and how to find specialized travel companies for exotic and developing regions, would be greatly appreciated.
Keep up the fantastic work! I eagerly look forward to your podcast each Saturday and hope to continue enjoying them for many years to come.
Kind regards,
Philip (Pike)
