Family-Friendly and Relaxing Portofino: Tips for Your Italian Getaway

Date:

Portofino is one of Italy’s most renowned seaside villages, nestled along the Italian Riviera in Liguria, not far from France. If you’re a fan of Italian focaccia, this picturesque destination is a must-visit, especially if you’re traveling with children!

It’s important to note that Portofino should not be confused with Positano, which has a similar name but is located on the Amalfi Coast near Naples in Southern Italy. Both destinations are breathtaking and worthy of a visit!

Portofino tips 1

Portofino exudes glamour; as you stroll through its cafés lining the harbor, you might just encounter celebrities and members of the international jet-set.

Beyond the elegant villas and luxurious yachts in the harbor, Portofino retains its charm as a quaint fishing village, bursting with color and hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Though it is one of Italy’s most exclusive and expensive locations, there are numerous ways to experience it on a budget and in a family-friendly manner.

What to do in Portofino with kids

Once you’ve settled on a place to stay, consider planning day trips to the stunning nearby villages along the Riviera, such as Portofino, Camogli, and the Cinque Terre. If you visit in July, don’t miss the Andersen Festival, a family-friendly celebration held in Sestri Levante.

Our tip: Whenever possible, opt for public transport like buses, trains, or ferries instead of driving, as parking can be tricky and expensive, especially during peak season when traffic is heavy.

Beaches are a must-visit when in Portofino. However, be prepared for crowds from June to September. Most beaches along the Riviera are narrow and rocky, so don’t expect long stretches of sandy shoreline for your kids to play on. Nevertheless, the dramatic rocky landscapes are breathtaking, and the fantastic sea ensures swimming is delightful. The coastline is also ideal for snorkeling activities!

An exciting and less conventional way to enjoy the sea is to explore the bay by kayak. Kids will love this adventure! No prior experience or exceptional fitness is required. We had a wonderful experience with Outdoor Portofino, a sports club focused on water sports and educational activities related to the Protected Marine Area of Portofino, located at Niasca, a quaint beach situated between Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino.

If you want to plan ahead, consider booking an easy Kayak Tour in Portofino, which offers optional snorkeling. You’ll be treated to stunning views from the water!

If kayaking or paddleboarding isn’t your style, consider taking a day trip boat tour that visits the captivating villages of Camogli, Portofino, and San Fruttuoso. These charming coastal communities are renowned worldwide, featuring crystal-clear waters and spectacular coastal views that guarantee unforgettable memories!

Another must-see is the beautiful San Fruttuoso Abbey. This unique site can only be accessed by foot via a couple of hiking paths or by boat, with a regular boat service departing from Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure, Camogli, Rapallo, Sestri Levante, Chiavari, and Genoa.

San Fruttuoso bay tips

The monastic complex, dating back to the 10th century, overlooks the bay and possesses a magical ambiance. Take your time to explore each room and enjoy the breathtaking views from the terrace. You can opt to have lunch at the charming restaurant on the beach or bring your own picnic to enjoy along the shore.

For nature lovers and hikers, Portofino provides stunning trails through the wilderness of its National Park, also known as Monte Portofino.

This protected area has been preserved since 1935 and offers numerous paths through woodlands, historical settlements, and charming fishing towns filled with art and history. Kids will enjoy exploring together; here’s a family-friendly trail you can try:

The Bunker Trail
Duration: approximately 45 minutes
Difficulty: easy
Elevation gain: 300 meters

The trail starts at the square in front of the San Rocco di Camogli Church. You will need to drive to Ruta di Camogli and then follow signs to San Rocco. Note that only residents are permitted to drive into the village, so you’ll have to park in the larger square near a barrier preventing non-residents entry. The church is about a 15-minute walk from there. Look for the narrow paved road leading towards “Batterie.” This trail ascends to approximately 300 meters and is suitable for children, with paths winding through oaks, olives, and pine trees, providing enchanting sea views.

The trail culminates at the “batterie,” which are WWII bunkers built by the Germans. These well-preserved fortifications are certainly worth a visit.

Where to Stay

If you’re planning to explore the Riviera, I recommend not staying in Portofino itself. It is one of the priciest areas in Italy, and there isn’t much space for children to play or a proper beach to enjoy. Consider Santa Margherita Ligure, only 10 km away, as a wonderful alternative and a great base for your Riviera adventures.

Santa Margherita Ligure is lively, features beautiful beaches and a charming harbor, is less costly, and is conveniently linked to Portofino by an efficient bus service (though it can be crowded during the high season). A budget-friendly accommodation option is Istituto San Colombo, a clean hostel offering simple but spacious family rooms, all with private bathrooms. The rooms can accommodate 4, 6, or even 8 people. While meals are not served, the hostel has a kitchen and a large dining area for guests to prepare their meals, with many delightful cafes, bars, and restaurants nearby, plus the seaside is just a short walk away.

Another great option is the charming B&B Il Tulipano: check out our review.
