There are many effective ways to reduce costs when traveling on short-haul trips. You can often find affordable last-minute flights by booking wisely, choose more budget-friendly destinations (like the numerous attractive city breaks across Europe), and consider alternative modes of transportation (train travel is experiencing a resurgence).

However, for many, that once-in-a-lifetime bucket-list journey often leads to distant lands. Planning long-haul vacations can be challenging—they typically require a lot of organization, time off work, and, above all, money. Fortunately, if you conduct thorough research, there are several strategies to help minimize the expenses associated with long-haul travel.

The 15th annual Long Haul Holiday Report by Post Office Travel Money is an invaluable resource for travelers looking to plan their trips on a budget. The report evaluates various factors that impact the cost of visiting distant destinations, such as the price of a cup of coffee, a glass of wine, sunscreen, or even a three-course dinner for two.

“Our research showed significant differences in the prices of common tourist items across the destinations we examined,” said Laura Plunkett, Head of Travel Money at the Post Office. “This suggests that holidaymakers could save a considerable amount of money and significantly lower the overall cost of their winter sun holiday by doing a little preliminary research to discover where meals, drinks, and other essentials are most affordable.”
