I’ve Been Hard at Work Sewing

Date:

What began as a pop-up in my friend Sam’s shop has evolved into a permanent establishment over the last few years.

Sam isn’t his real name; it’s Savva. However, when I met him 30 years ago, he introduced himself as Sam, and that’s who he remains to me.

He operates a tailoring shop in West End, offering made-to-measure clothing and alterations. This summer, he is also creating some pieces for the shop. While I’m in Australia, I enjoy sewing casual, everyday clothes that are perfect for our long, hot summers. Sam is a talented designer, and his collection this season is exceptional.

Here’s a striking leather jacket he crafted for a fashion competition, and he plans to replicate it soon using denim.

In the meantime, I collaborated with Sam on a project where he made the skirt from embroidered linen while I created the top.

Here are a few pieces I’m preparing for the upcoming season.

We also produce tablecloths and table napkins.

If you’re looking for well-crafted clothing made from natural fabrics, come and visit us. I’ve been sewing my own clothes for most of my life, so I know they wash, wear well, and last for years. Sam learned to sew from his wonderful mother and has been creating since he was very young.

I collect fabric during my travels and have discovered some fantastic finds from Italy, Finland, and Japan, along with locally sourced materials. I aim to find end-of-line items and surplus stock to keep prices affordable. I have a great source for fabrics outside Florence that I visit several times a year.

For those in Brisbane who enjoy sewing, we have one of the best fabric shops in the world right here. I’ve shopped at Alla Moda (located in the Emporium shopping centre in the Valley) for 40 years, and they offer the best selection of fabrics I’ve ever seen.

Sam’s shop is named Sarva, found at 239 Boundary St, West End, nestled between Gum Bistro and Alphabet Cafe—both exceptional and popular spots. When I’m in Australia, you can find me at the shop most days. Even when I’m away, the store remains open, but you might need to ring the doorbell since Sam is often busy sewing at the back.

Fast fashion leads to massive waste and overflowing landfills. Choose quality over quantity and support local businesses!

We also have an Instagram page called “What’s new at Sarva.”
