DRIVING IN SOUTH KOREA

Rental car companies have different policies regarding international driving licenses, but generally, you need to be at least 21 years old and have at least one year of driving experience to rent a car. Some companies may require that you be a minimum of 26 years old and have three years of driving experience to rent larger vehicles.

BOOKING YOUR RENTAL CAR

While it may seem convenient to rent a car at the airport, it can often result in higher rates and limited availability. To ensure you secure the vehicle you want, make your reservation well in advance of your trip. For informative content regarding car rentals, don’t forget to watch “How to Rent a Car and Drive in Jeju, Korea” available on our Visit Jeju Global YouTube channel.

PEAK TRAVEL SEASONS IN JEJU

The high travel seasons for Jeju Island typically occur during the summer and coincide with two major Korean holidays: Lunar New Year (January/February) and Chuseok (September/October). Please note that the dates for these holidays vary each year as they follow the Lunar calendar.

RENTING AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE

If you are concerned about fuel costs and want to be eco-friendly, renting an electric vehicle (EV) could be the perfect option for you. There are numerous charging stations throughout the island, and most attractions have charging facilities available. PICKING UP YOUR RENTAL CAR

All rental car companies are located off-site, so you will be provided with a free shuttle service to the rental location. Once you arrive at the rental lot, the staff will handle the paperwork, and you will be asked to take photos of the car’s exterior. This is a standard procedure in Korea to document any existing damages, ensuring you won’t be held liable for them later.

NAVIGATING AROUND JEJU

It’s important to note that Google Maps does not function well in South Korea. For effective navigation, consider using Korean map applications like KakaoMap or NAVER Map on your smartphone.

TRAFFIC SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS

Traffic speed limits and violations in South Korea are monitored by surveillance cameras. If you are using a navigation system, it will alert you to nearby cameras and display the speed limit.
