Have you ever had one of those days when you just needed a good laugh? That’s how I’m feeling today! So, I thought it would be a great idea to revisit an old post that’s both funny and a little embarrassing for me!
***********************************************************************
Looking back at this story, it seems quite amusing now. At the time, it felt like I had just landed on another planet! I guess it all comes down to experiences, where situations that seem alarming at first later become quite funny.
What am I referring to?
Let me share a little story from when I first arrived in Chicago.
I was at the grocery store, thrilled to see products I had never encountered before. (If you’re chuckling at this, maybe you’re Canadian! We love ‘cross-border shopping’ because there are so many items available in the U.S. that you can’t find in Canada!)
There I was, feeling like a kid in a candy store, mesmerized by the ten different types of Pepsi, when suddenly a man approached me from behind, startling me in my soda-induced daze!
Before I knew it, I was face-to-face with a stranger who looked me in the eye and asked, “Can I have ten dollars?” My immediate thought was, “What in the world?”
With the speed of a small dog (I’m only 5’3″, so let’s say a Pomeranian), I quickly left the soda aisle and rushed to the first person I saw. The gentleman was stocking shelves and immediately paused when I approached. I must have looked like someone who had just hit the jackpot or was being pursued by a troupe of clowns.
“Miss, are you alright?” he asked, a look of concern spreading across his face.
Trying to catch my breath to explain what had just transpired, I finally managed to say, “A man just asked me for ten dollars!”
Have you ever felt that someone is trying hard not to laugh even though they know you’re serious?
His reply? “Uh-huh…” I felt the need to justify myself by saying, “I’m from Canada, and nothing like this has ever happened to me.”
With a gentle smile, he replied, “Well, you’re in Chicago now!”
Ah, so this is Chicago… Back then, it felt bizarre, but now I chuckle at my overreaction to being asked for money in a grocery store.
I had never encountered anything like that before, so it caught me off guard. Now, such occurrences barely register on my radar. I guess I’ve become quite accustomed to incidents like my ‘ten-dollar grocery store’ experience.
Has anything similar happened to you? Have you ever looked back and thought, “Why did I react that way?”
In retrospect, I can laugh at myself from the store clerk’s perspective. What a spectacle I must have been! Would I give someone ten dollars who approached me in a store? Probably not. But I could definitely point them to the Pepsi section. Did you know they have a flavor called “1893 – Black Currant Cola”? I didn’t either until I stumbled upon it!

I hope you have a wonderful day filled with laughter!
