Traveling from Lecce to Rome—a journey through the stunning Puglia region—offers a beautiful tapestry of experiences that enrich our minds and hearts as we traverse this magnificent country.

The train route through southern Italy showcases picturesque olive groves, known for producing some of the finest olive oil in the world, alongside vibrant farms that supply markets, homes, and restaurants with fresh, delectable produce, adding color and charm to the scenery.

As the train glides through the countryside, you’ll see bright yellow and orange wildflowers, majestic palm trees, and centuries-old palazzi. Enjoy breathtaking views of the stunning blue ocean stretching for miles, captivating travelers with its beauty.

Put aside your phone and forget about reading or playing games—the richness of the environment and its history will draw you in completely.

The train journey to Rome has an interesting quirk. After a few hours of traveling north, the train arrives at Foggia station, then surprisingly reverses direction, backtracking southward. Suddenly, what was once the front of the train is now the rear, and seats that faced forward now face back.

The steward chuckled patiently when I queried whether this train was truly headed to Rome.

This route necessitates a southward loop through the Apennine mountains, which have historically separated eastern and western Italy. However, this detour allows access to more cities, including Caserta.

As we pulled into the Caserta stop, a stunning sight emerged: the Royal Palace of Caserta. This magnificent structure is one of the largest royal residences worldwide, boasting over 2.5 million square feet of space, 1200 rooms, and a breathtaking 70 million cubic feet of volume across five floors.

Construction commenced in 1752 for Charles VII of Naples and his court. Notably, during the Allied invasion in 1943, the palace served as the headquarters for the Supreme Allied Commander in the Mediterranean region—a significant upgrade from his previous tent accommodations.

Even a brief visit of fewer than 24 hours in Rome is incredibly rewarding. The constant presence of historical and artistic beauty never ceases to amaze. The city is committed to preserving its rich cultural heritage while also embracing contemporary art, as evidenced by the numerous new museums, concert halls, and innovative art spaces. Each time I visit Rome, I feel rejuvenated by its rich past and vibrant present.
