The History of Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong, which means “to float a basket,” is celebrated on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, typically occurring in late October or early November. The origins of this festival are rooted in various stories. The most widely accepted tale suggests it began during the Sukhothai era, when this city served as Thailand’s capital. Others indicate that the festival began during the early days of Bangkok as a means of honoring the Buddha. During the celebration, participants release krathong, which are small floating vessels containing candles, onto rivers, lakes, and ponds as a way to pay respect to the Buddha. The act of floating these vessels symbolizes the release of hatred and anger.

This theme of letting go remains strong today. Couples and families hope that by floating their krathong, they can eliminate past grievances and attract good fortune for the coming year. Participants often include fingernail or hair clippings in their krathong when they send it adrift. Additionally, the festival serves as a way to honor river spirits, particularly Phra Mae Khongkha, the Goddess of Water. As such, it is common to place a few small coins inside the krathong along with the hair and nail clippings.

While krathong are traditionally made from banana tree trunks, contemporary versions often use biodegradable materials like bread or polystyrene, which is more environmentally friendly. In some regions, krathong are crafted from coconut shells. In northern Thailand, particularly in Chiang Mai, Loy Krathong coincides with the Yi Peng festival, which is unique to the Lanna culture. During this festival, thousands of hot air lanterns are released into the night sky, creating a stunning visual display. One of the popular locations for this release is Mae Jo University, which hosts a mass launch a week prior to the national Loy Krathong celebrations.

Celebrating Loy Krathong in Bangkok

Bangkok offers a vibrant atmosphere for celebrating the festival. The city’s parks with ponds and waterways become popular gathering spots for friends, couples, and families to launch their krathong. The path taken by a krathong often serves as a whimsical way for couples to predict their future together. Notable parks for celebration include Lumpini Park, Benjasiri Park, and Benjakitti Park.

Many temples, especially those along the river, host traditional temple fairs filled with activities and delicious food!

In 2022, The River Festival will run from November 5 to 8, featuring activities at 10 piers or temples along the Chao Phraya River, including Asiatique, IconSiam, Wat Kalayanamit, Wat Arun, Wat Pho, Tha Maharah, and Wat Rakang. A free shuttle boat will operate between these venues, offering temple fairs, floating krathongs, workshops, and more.

Additionally, the Santi Chai Prakan Park will host a special event called “The Amazing Night Light of Loi Krathong” from November 6 to 8.
